Hey that was really neat. As a beginer pipe maker who buys very cheap pre-cut briar and has yet to learn how to follow the grain of the briar to make a beautiful pipe, I think I would like to try your rustication technique! (I'm not hinting that you cover up poor grain, I'm just hinting that I will....

search not searching?

I've been trying to search older posts for different things of interest, but every topic I search comes up empty (nothing found). I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious, or if the forum's search feature is just not working. (I used the search word "pipe" and came up with nothing...)...

churchwarden stems

I've never made a churchwarden pipe before, but have always wanted to. However, the only stems I can find for sale are 8 inches long, and the idea in my head is for a pipe with a 12 or 14" long stem. Anybody have one or two of these they'd be willing to sell (I haven't got anything to trade), o...

How to pre-carbonize a bowl

I've been doing searching and have found lots of pipe makers that say they go through the pre-carbonizing process, but have found next to nothing on how it is done. (Google translated one page for me that said you can do it with water, honey, and briar charcoal, but nothing on the process). Is the p...

I order almost everything from andrea now, even though I have never made a minimum purchase of 100. She is probably the most helpful online store owner I have ever come accross. She's always happy to post some stuff up on ebay for you, and if you talk to her I'm sure she won't have a problem making ...

I went both ways. I started with a couple of pimo kits and then I decided to buy 6 blocks of cheap algerian briar for $16 and a bunch of stems figuring if I screwed up all but one of the briar blocks it would have been a good investment. The briar was not very good, and a couple pieces had some majo...

How do get rid of that dull gray look

So I was hiking through the woods the other night, smoking a relatively new pipe, when I slipped going up a hill. My pipe flew out of my mouth and landed in a thin set of branches right above a not-so-frozen-over creek (whew!) Unfortunately as it landed snow from the branches (and probably my gloves...

Problems with bulk vulcanite stems

I'm a very new to making pipes, and have only worked on about 10 pipes. A friend and I ordered a pack of 2 dozen random assortment vulcanite machine crafted stems, which were all unpolished and many had the orange oxidized tint to them. My problem- No matter how much I sand the stems (I get up to gl...
