Yep, once you get the edges of wood turning is really smooth and somewhat meditative

Re: Do the prices of other pipe makers bother you?
Time, hard work and exceptional skill levels will dictate pricing. I believe this is true for experienced enthusiasts, "well read" customers and a loyal customer base. On the other hand there is a hype of "hand made quality" right now that seems to be making people go nuts. The ...

Re: Crazy idea? Briar watch
That is a neat idea! Although I must say it bugs me when they claim the watch is 100% wood  One alternative could be to look for an old mechanical watch at ebay, demount it and use the parts for your own. It will surely take some time but it might be worth it.. however if you do, be gentle wit...

Re: Summer Edition of P&T Magazine - Crappy !
I personally was blown away when I first saw the post on the Gear-Punk pipe here at the forum.
I would be surprised if it was not the joined (-1 apparently) opinion of this forum that Nate produces most fine smoking pipes. Indeed that is my point of view, and I congratulate you on making the cover!

Re: Shellac-on-rustic question
The cut is pounds of flake per gallon of solvent. 1 pound = 453 grams 1 gallon = 3,78 litres So if you count back and forth (I may be mistaken...) a 1 pound cut should be 83,4 grams of shellac for 1 litre of alcohol. So Sasquatch's 5 pound cut would be 417 grams of shellac in a litre of alcohol. No...

My only personal design opinion would be that the stem could have started taper a bit earlier.
Best regards, Jon

Re: 2013 Pipe In The Hat Trade
Just to be clear, does it have to have long shank or just "as long as possible from the block/chosen design"? Or are we talking canadian-"fruits"??
I have a pretty good idea, but just want to be sure if its OK by the definitions of the PITH.

I must say i like all the ideas so far! Vegetable theme would really leave the PITH open for interpretations, a lot of classics inspired from nature:-)

Re: allow me to introduce myself
My read on both the MSDS and the paper presented in the links is that the stuff is a lot safer than paint thinner, linseed oil, grout, wood dust, rubber dust, metal oxides, lacquer, pipe smoke, every type of adhesive, and just about everything else in my shop, actually. If you feed it in huge doses...

Re: attention European pipemakers
Regardless of what it is, I think you could accomplish the same set-up with a regular lathe or a polishing/sanding machine? Correct me if I'm wrong but a lathe with French wheel and polishing arbour mounted to the Jacobs chuck would do the same, and it would also have one additional feature...turnin...

After shaping while drinking beer, which of course is the best way to do it, I however find it useful to check the shape the day afterSasquatch wrote:I agree. Half-round rasp, round rasp, and a glass of beer will see it through nicely.bregolad wrote:doing it freehand is one of the great joys of the art.

I agree with what Sas wrote regarding the first one...just like I tried to say the last time you posted that pipe.
Regarding the second one it looks like a good start to me, and with the previous feedback it could turn out really good.
