Using a drill press to stamp pipes

Hello all, I bought a couple of stamps from A&M because Tim West uses that company. Tim had told me to roll in the stamp and it does seem to work. I decided to set up a jig on a piece of wood with a v block. I drilled a hole dead center in the V block to accept a drift pin and then put that size...

Cherry wood update

Hello All, I think the sap I'm getting from my Cherry (American) is because when I cut it down it was warm weather and the sap was up. The Brazilian cherry made a nice billiard, in fact two, a large and a medium. Good smoking but maybe on the heavy side. They seem to break in well, smoke cool and ha...

Shop made fixture for tenon work

Hello All, I thought I'd pass on a description for a fixture I made for holding tenons while I'm drilling and shaping them. I am sure this is not the first time someone has thought of the idea but it works very well for me and I have not seen them mentioned. I took a 1.5 inch piece of high impact pl...

tadpoles...

I went to the link and thought the sanding tadpoles looked handy, so, while at Woodcraft today, I found they had them in stock, don't call them tadpoles but they appear to be the same thing.

Brazilain Cherry Wood

I bought some Brazilian Cherry Wood at the Woodcraft store, today, and it is much heavier than the American Cherry Wood. Seems to be dry so I don't think the weight is moisture, the grain is much tighter than our Cherry. Worth a try, hope it is not toxic.......

Tadpoles, eh!

I checked out that link and I have to give those a try. My wife said to leave her nailfiles alone or she would scratch my eyes out so tadpoles it will be.

Man, I've really picked up some cool ideas from this site. Good idea, whoever started it.

First Cherry pipe

Well..... My first cherry pipe smoked well, got hot as I expected but I didn't expect to have sap seep to the surface, on the shank. I thought this wood was well dried out after being on the shelf for so long. I'm going to sand it off, keep smoking it and see what happens. I half expect it to crack ...

Cherry Wood

Hello All, Made my first Cherry Wood pipe today, kind of a tall Dublin. I thought it would be a lot easier than briar but it really wasn't. That is not the reason I wanted to make a Cherry pipe but it was my thinking that a softer wood, would be easier to deal with. I cut it so that I had straight g...

Pipe Maker's Emporium

I've had very good luck with this company, also. Andrea has been very helpful, doesn't always have the answers but will find out for you... I orderd some of their Morrocan bria but haven't tried it yet. They also give 10% to Napsca members.

Sanding sticks

Kurt,

Are these a lot like the ones at Woodcraft or more like a fingernail file.

Tobacco chamber diameter

I bought some tobacco chamber bits from Ken Lamb and am having good luck with them. I only make pipes for myself, family and friends so my tobacco chamber diameter is geared for the individual. I like a 7/8 diameter as it is much easier for me to pack. A 3/4 inch is just a bit small for me to load, ...

African Olivewood

Hello All, I picked up some African Olivewood from an exotic wood dealer in Colorado. I have never had an Olivewood pipe or have smoked one, some friends do and I do like the grain, kinda , something different. Anyway, thought I'd try one on the lathe and was surprised how hard the wood turned. The ...

I use the Pimo tenon cutter in my lathe, sizing it just a bit larger than I want the final cut to be and then use my cutter on the lathe to take it down to the right fit. This saves me a lot of time in turning the tenon all the way to size with my cutter on the lathe. I tend to take my time with the...

Hello NIck, A vise does work for me ( I might need to get Websters out again) since I am hand filing when I get close to the desired shape. I can work a bit on one side and then rotate the pipe on the dowel to another position for more filing. I find that it saves on my hands, also. I have had Carpa...

What exactly is a "Taig?" I really am a newbie at this stuff. I have more time on a router but doubt it will do me any good with pipes.
