Re: Doing the best you can with what you've got

As long as this is a hobby and not a part time job you really don't need very many tools... I have a bench mounted vise, cordless drill, a dremel, set of large files, set of jewelers files, a set of drill bits, sandpaper, a 1 inch forstner bit, a fork and a spade bit I made into a ghetto spoon bit. ...

Re: Coloring stems

I'm pretty sure they can be colored when they're melted, as that's how they're colored in the first place. And Duane, please stop with the "heehee". It's driving me crazy. Rad I don't think thermoplastics need to be completely melted into a liquid state to color them becau...

Re: Coloring stems

Hold on, I'm about to talk out my ass about plastics. I'm not really sure if those acrylic mouthpieces are really acrylic, or what plastic they are. But, you can heat and bend them, so they are thermoplastics. So I think those guys have strong primary bonds and weak secondary bonds or something like...

Re: Can you have glue in the tobacco chamber?

Yerp, that's an option too... or rusticate a racing stripe with the plug hidden in there.

I guess the gist is to avoid a plug in the bowl because that'll be bad?

Re: Can you have glue in the tobacco chamber?

OK, OK... even if I make it, I'll still probably never post pictures so I'll tell ya. I want to do a stretched out hawkbill so a solid straight airway will leave a couple holes in the shank. I could put the plug in the shank, but then I'd have to rusticate the shank and I'd rather rusticate the bowl...

Re: Can you have glue in the tobacco chamber?

Yerp, I'm not crazy like the rest of you loonies, I don't sell my pipes. Call it a shop pipe, I'll smoke it anywhere. I don't want anybody to see the plug or know it's there. Plan is "I'd also rusticate the holy heck outta that bowl so nobody could see the plug." So now, will the plug hold...

Can you have glue in the tobacco chamber?

So I have an idea for a pipe but because of the curve and angle of the shank I think I'd need to drill the airway from the bottom of the stummel out to the mortise, then drill the tobacco chamber down to meet it. That'd leave me with a hole that I'd need to plug, which means there'd be wood glue in ...

Rev: I'd just like to clarify, I never said I don't make nice pipes... I just don't let it bother me when I smoke a pipe that isn't. Re: Buying Pipes

Interesting. I'm waiting for someone to say "Oh yeah, I smoke this old (insert 50 dollar pipe) all the time, who cares? It's just a pipe."... Is saying I smoke an old $10 ebayed factory pipe close enough? Pipes are a hobby for me. I Like smoking them and I like playing around in the garag...

Re: Buying Pipes

I think it's about expectations. I don't expect every puff from every pipe to be a religious experience so my $10 eBay Savs are fine for me. If I'm really feeling squirrely I'll smoke one of my own pipes BUT since I refuse to sell my pipes that's not a problem. I don't have to decide between selling...

Hey, who remembers this conversation? Welp, I'll be damned if I didn't just get an email saying Barnes and Noble had a credit card skimmer scam problem and since I bought Snow Crash there with my debit card within the past year my bank is freezing that card and issuing me a new one. I find it a litt...

Re: Chamber size, shape, does it matter?

I think most folks do a U with a slight taper in it. In theory, for a good smoking pipe you'd want the surface area at the top opening of the bowl to be equal to the surface area just before you round out at the bottom. In practice it seems a little bit of taper between the two makes a good smoker. ...

Re: Chamber size, shape, does it matter?

Welp, I don't know nothing about the flavor of smoke coming from the warm tobacco or the actually on fire tobacco, but I can tell you something about air flow. It acts purdy dang close to water when it's flowing... so if you you have a tiny opening at the top of the tobacco chamber, then open up wid...

So then, what'll happen to the up and coming blowfish pipe? Not too sure any of the guys at your local truck shop will appreciate it... might have to just give it away to somebody.
