Boekweg: Thank you for the kind words.
wdteipen: I'm going to start practicing billiards on cheaper wood until I get the hang of it, then try one in briar for my #2. Thanks for the tip... hopefully it helps my get better at making pipes.

Re: Topic about pipe racks?
billiard: Outstanding idea... a ton less work than I was planning and it's modular so I can expand in the future. I like really it.

Re: SchmidtN's first pipe
Thanks for the tips wdteipen. Maybe I should work on a billiard, poker or egg? I think I'm going to practice on cheaper woods before working with briar again. What kind of more traditional shapes do you guys think I should focus on?

Re: Hand Fatigue
For what part of the pipe is the fork used? Rusticating. Duh. I ate dinner at the work bench while working on my first (and only so far) pipe, so I had a cup of ramen while I worked. It was a rusticated pipe (you can go look at it in the gallery and tell me how you like it  ) so I ...

Re: Hand Fatigue
For really small sanding, an old electric toothbrush can be turned into a mechanical sander and that'll help save your hand. I also don't hold onto the pipe very often, I have a square stick that I rasped the end round and wrap with paper towel until the stummel fits snug on it. Toothbrush sander di...

SchmidtN's first pipe
I just learned that you need to be good at making pipes AND good at taking pictures of pipes. Not sure I've got the hang of either, yet. This is my very first pipe and I had to rusticate it because of a lot of pits, I also had to use pipe mud inside the bowl because of another giant pit. Since I was...

Topic about pipe racks?
Maybe I'm searching wrong, but I've been snooping around trying to find pictures of everyone's pipe racks and haven't had any luck. Does one exist? I'm going to make an eight pipe, pipe rack and was looking to rip off somebody else's design.

Re: Chinrester
Do you have a right angle drill bit, sir? I don't normally like freestyle pipes, but I really like pipes that make me wonder how they were made. What medium was used to blast it, how was it drilled, how can it be smoked? All those mysteries... it's like watching a magic act. I'm a humble newbie so t...

Thanks for the advice. Pipe mud it is.
And I'll have to find better briar for next time.

Re: Partial Rustication and pits
Yes, the pit is very deep. I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 way through the wall of the bowl. And the entire stummel has 8 pits that I can see right now. How the heck do you guys make smooth pipes with wood this full of holes? Is carbon the filler of choice? I'm kind of concerned it'll expand because of heat and ...

Partial Rustication and pits
Hi everybody, long time lurker, first time poster. I've lurked and read and looked at you guys making pipes and decided I'd try to make a few. I'm working on my first pipe and I really don't know how you guys do it. My piece of briar has so many sand pits in it I don't know how any smooth pipes get ...
