Re: Beech Burl Pipe

I have no experience with beech pipes, but I do know it's a great wood for making planes because of its hardness and density. It will probably work, assuming it doesn't burn easily. The following two sites have some more info that you might find useful: Physical Properties of Common Woods Wood Aller...

Re: IS ASH AN OPTION

Personally, if I were you I would use the ash to make tools. I understand you want to make a pipe in your dad's memory from the wood you and he felled and split, but I personally feel that tools are a more durable and useful tribute to him. I've made a few lathe tool handles out of ash that work gre...

Re: Freehand with Inlay Shank Extension

I love bloodwood, but I hate that it just turns brown after a while. Hopefully yours keeps for a while (or still looks good when it does change).

I love this one. The size and proportions look wonderful. I'm not experienced enough to notice anything to fix so I'll leave that to the experts.

Re: squaring blocks

Not that I have all that much experience, I've found that making the block perfectly square is unnecessary. When you're drawing the lines, just try to make them line up and eyeball them straight when you mount the block in the lathe chuck.

Re: 13-11 'Gear-Punk'

Well, that got my attention. I'm usually a fan of the traditional shapes, but I'd be more than happy to smoke that one.

Excellent job. Definitely one of the most interesting pipes I've seen in a while.

Re: Picture Request - Button Close-ups

Sas said he was going to post a Step by Step button making tutorial next time he cut a stem. I'm sure it will include some awesome closeups...when he posts it. I agree with you, I've come across a few pics like Nate's that have really helped me see what it should look like. This site has some great...

Re: Picture Request - Button Close-ups

Right, but just from looking, none of these have close-ups on the button. They all seem to be just overall pics of pipes. I'm looking for more like this pic Nate posted in the Gallery: http://www.natekingpipes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/P1150051.jpg But from different angles than just the mouth-...

Picture Request - Button Close-ups

Hi guys,

I'm working on the button for a hand-cut stem and am having problems getting it to look attractive. Would anyone mind taking some close-ups of a button from a few different angles and posting them?

These sure are a pain in the ass.

Re: Ancient Kauri

At the price this stuff sells for you could buy a lot of briar. Are there no peat bogs in the US of A? It's not so much that I'm looking for a morta alternative, just that I was curious if anyone had used it before. I'd love to see a pipe made with ancient kauri, but I'm sure it would be well out o...

Love the cross-cut grain in this one. Those eyes sure pop.

Any special staining techniques you used on this or is it just a single color?

Ancient Kauri

I have to ask, anyone ever made a pipe out of ancient kauri ? I feel like it should be along the lines of morta since it's created with more or less the same process. Just out of 50,000 year-old kauri instead of oak. However, the stuff is wicked expensive. The 40ft slab on the front page is worth $1...

Re: Live and learn!

I've been meaning to make something similar to this, but out of leather so it has a smaller footprint in a suitcase. Thus far I've just been using a Ziploc bag and wrapping my pipe in a handkerchief. I'm not a fan of those clasps that you used. I've never gotten them to align correctly and they alwa...
