Re: Madrone Wood?

i sometimes use pacific madrone for disposable pieces. I have a lot of it because i found a pretty long fallen branch of it a couple years back in the mountains, and i havent been getting out to harvest manzanita much lateley so i make due with it instead. In my expieriences when using the branches ...

Myself, i consider a pipe that you cannot see burning while smoking to be a cutty.

Kada wrote:when you dry it, what is your method? smoking it soon (green?) sounds interesting. Its sure a lot easier to carve green, but i hate spending time on carving it only to see it split :(
yes smoke it then carve it. i believe smoking it cures it somehow, maybe the drilling as well.

Re: Strawberry Tree

Great pipe, great sandblast. Does anyone know, if this wood requires the same process as briar in order to be "smokable"? There are plenty of strawberry trees here in my place, so maybe I'll try it, too. to prevent it from cracking, i work with freshly cut wood or fairly new and then i us...

Re: Strawberry Tree

There are two tipes of Strawberry Tree only one of which is suitable for pipes and it's not found outside europe. I've read several reports on Paolo's experiments and they all seem very positive. From what I understand it is the wood of the tree which is used rather than the root, although that may...

Re: Manzanita post drying curing

dont even dry it, just find a living manzanita and cut off a branch with good curved growths and drill along the length of the pieces of the branch you want, then smoke out of it as soon as possible.
ive done that and none of the pipes ive made have ever cracked.

Re: Anyone tried Arbutus?

Re: Unfinished (but functional) manzanita branch pipe

i have been making manzanita pipes for about 4 months now and ive made quite a few, a method i use to stop the cracking is to work with it as soon as possible and smoke out of it as soon as possible, it seems that when you drill it it pushes some of the liquid out and smoking out of it might help it...
