I meant this forum software was hard to post in. [img] tags with remote hosting, etc. I basically wrote a small webpage as a post. 🤮

Re: Friendly critique of Deden Durahman's pipe

None of the photos are clickable. I fixed it...I think. No wonder participation in this site has declined, that post was INCREDIBLY hard to create. Since I last creating a post like this Instagram has been invented. I forgot about the good old, uphill-in-snow-both-ways days. I used to think nothing...

Friendly critique of Deden Durahman's pipe

I offered to critique a pipe of Deden Durahman's pipe he posted on Facebook in our PMF group there, but Facebook is so difficult to use for any substantial discourse I have created a thread here so I may effectively communicate. It looks like you got a bad piece. Both NYH and SEM make good products, but mistakes happen. I’d talk to SEM about it. That is not typical of their product.

Re: Mentoring? A suggestion for the experienced carvers.

Those of you who have been doing this for some time, Find the time to take one of us new guys and mentor them. I have a mentor from another site who has taught me more in the two months he's worked with me than I would have learned in a year or more alone, even with this board as a reference. The w...

Re: Here's something you don't see every day

At the risk of sounding like a sycophant, because I have made this observation before, I will point out that the 5 stems on the right are superior to the example stem on the left. The example stem on the left has a vague bulging and flattening in the midportion as delineated by the blurred and dive...

Re: Chicago room

Who are you, again? I vaguely remember a carver guy in Oklahoma named Tyler something-or-other, but he just sorta disappeared... Found a job digging oil wells with one of those post hole chopper-pincher things out in the boondocks, from what I hear. You related to him? Like his cousin or something?...

Re: Help with sharpening spoon bit?

To deviate slightly, and therefore be virtually no help, I can’t help but mention something that has been parenthetically stated above: spoon bits have a singular purpose, namely, to be used for drilling after shaping. While physics certainly accommodates use in other methods, absolutely zero benefi...

Re: Help me build a new shop.

George is correct that TJ’s shop inspired mine. I do about 90% of pipe making sitting down with all my tools within about 4’ of me at any given moment. I’d claim it’s efficiemt, but at three pipes a year my credibility might be stretched. :D

Re: Ball Saddle Stem

One factor on the etch-a-sketch method is your lathe. If you have a 7x20, good luck. The tiny wheels make it really hard. The bigger the handwheels, the easier it is to etch-a-sketch. On my 12” it’s pretty easy to get close to what I want, then I just refine it with sand paper.

Re: Is this pipe worth $470?

Another factor to consider is that $470 for some makers isn't expensive. Once you've been at this for a while, and once your prices have hit 4 digits, a pipe in the $400's seems like a lower end price. It's a price that you can ask for a less than perfect pipe. I realize that might be frustrating if...

I used a oneway for years with only the small jaws it comes with. It grabs so tightly it wasn't a problem.

It is not hard to use the bars. If this chuck is in your budget, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Re: Pin gauges

I recommend the cheapest set you can find on eBay. We aren't using them for their intended purpose, and we absolutely don't need the accuracy of the high dollar sets. As for the set -v- individual gages, to me the whole point is the set. Every hole we drill can fluctuate in diameter a little. How dr...
