The current state of this forum
Friends, I have been thinking a fair amount lately about the state of this forum. This used to be the place to go for pipe making information. The archives still hold the greatest collection of pipe making info available on the 'Net, I think it's safe to say. However, I'd say the forum is dying. I t...

Re: question about air hole below mortice
All other issues/opinions aside, you need to take some length off the end of the shank so you have some room to work with on the bottom of the shank. As is, you'll either expose the draft hole or have a paper thin area. I am more with Wayne on the acceptability of this type of drilling...no big deal...

I'd go PM. (I did go PM, actually.)
It comes with a QC tool post, a Jacobs chuck, a good three-jaw, and 5 tool holders for the QC. All you really need is cutting tools. A few hundred for tooling is all you need.

Re: Gibfried
Tyler, there is a nice shop in Springfield, just north of you. It is a great shop for all things tobacco and dude stuff (aftershave, hats, etc.). They have a pretty nice lineup of pipes, and not too shabby on the tobacco selection either. It's called 'Just for Him'. Look it up, it might surprise yo...

I'm up by Mark in Branson right now. A thirty minute drive and I could assure Mark had nothing available. Hmmmm.

Table space in KC?
Anyone have any space? I need a little and I know one other pipe maker that does.

Re: Lovat I did
The reason your bowl looks off is largely because you made the top of the bowl parallel with the shank. The bowl should cant forward (it appears it might), but the top of the bowl should be perpendicular to the axis of the bowl not parallel to the shank. Like this : http://www.baweaverpipes.com/imag...

Re: correcting a facing error
I'm on my 3rd pipe, 2nd time drilling my own and my first bent. I just faced the shank relative to the air hole rather than the tenon and now the stem is (of course) not sitting flush. I am hoping I can still correct this on the drill press. My plan is to line up a forster bit using the long axis o...

Thanks for the heads up George. I just booked. Fwiw, the courtyard rooms are different from the golf wing rooms. I don't know which of the 8,321 turns distinguishes the two, but apparently there will still be some rooms to the right of the front desk. (When I read courtyard rooms, I imagined everyth...

What you've drawn is not a great design. Make the shank straight.calsbeek wrote:thoughts ahead of time?

Would that be a dental lamp on the swinging arm? I'd love to have several of them. No such thing as too much light. Nice compact shop. Why yes it would :-) Got it from my father-in-law who's a dentist and moved out of one of his dental practices a few years back(he used to run 2). Too bad it's a 24...

I'm a pipe fixer, not a pipe maker, but both groups use a lot of the same stuff. Stem material, tools, etc. I've dealt with pretty much everyone in the supply biz at one time or another, and Steve / Vermont Freehand kicks their ass so thoroughly in every way it's actually pretty embarrassing. If cu...

Another tip, offered by a guy who loathes and therefore doesn't take commissions, is to remember that without the latitude for YOU to be in the pipe, why are they asking you? Exact copies are factory work.

Re: Sandblast cabinet glass protection.
I went with Bruce's advice. I can't imagine a better choice than a glass pane. I can actually see while I blast now, and there is no sign of hazing. I suspect it'll last a decade or more at the rate I blast.
