Re: Tool Holder!
If your using insert type lathe tooling, ceramic and cbn inserts will turn your cutter shanks down. Ceramics are the cheapest but use light cuts and they will last ok. We turn punches out of HSS blanks this way.

That's a lovely freehand sitter. I must try a flat bottomed pipe, they sit nicely for photos
For me I prefer a stem on a freehand to taper in to the turned rings if that makes sense.

Re: Inspired from Walle
Thanks for the comments guys. I mainly make pipes for fun or just to see what I can come up with. It's nice to try and force the mind in to something creative. If I can make a few bucks on the way well and good. I have an older Dunhill (54) which I purchased to see what all the fuss is about and yes...

Re: Inspired from Walle
Yeah your probably right but I'd made it to hang from my teeth against my jaw, a sort of effortless clenching style which does work. I might try unbending a little and see if it still works.

Inspired from Walle
I keep sneaking a peak at Walles site and find his pipes interesting in design and finish. This has led me to do a little experimenting along those lines. I'm not sure if what I have ended up with is good, bad or just ugly but it was worth the experiment as I have learned a bit more along the way. L...

Most unusual. I'm intrigued by your rustication methods. You could near make a pipe out of other woods instead of briar and no one would know
I'm still trying to work out how to make a fortune from not working and still be able to drink Guinness!

I'm biased as a toolmaker and would go for the metal lathe, it's just more versatile and can give you better accuracy.

Re: A few blades I've done
I wish you luck. I know how you feel, I run a small engineering business with around ten employees and I'm over it too. It would be nice to get back to a simpler life with less worries and do something you want to do rather than have too.

Re: A few blades I've done
Nice knives Jeremy.
You need a website to sell a few.
When I got my 6.5x54MS I got a Styer knife for it.
Now I've got a 25/06 Sauer on the way and will look for an accompanying knife.......

Re: Magma
I like the finish. Reminds me of a truffle. Stems a tad lumpy at the tenon end. The round shank...duno as I haven't seen enough to comment. Well done.

Re: 10-11 'Esquire'
I love the unusual shape. To me it's reminiscent of deer hunting and alpine walks or blackforresty. Colour is nice as is the blast. The only thing for me is the upward bend in the bamboo, I probably would of had this 180 around but then for an unusual shape who's to say whats right.
Stamp is cool too.

Re: A day of pipe related plants.
I bet those biome guys failed to consider that all of those plants naturally evolved for billions of years in the great forests of planet earth, where forest fires and, yes, smoke from burning vegitation (like tobacco smoke) was a part of the natural environment. :D Well said Mike. Based on this sm...

I checked out the link Chris, very cool place by the look of it.
Re: 11-11
I'm still yet to try this finish. Today I did try a scrap of briar against the wire wheel I had and only managed to burn it, back to the drawing board.....

Re: A day of pipe related plants.
Thanks for posting Chris. It must have been interesting to see the live plants. I gather then that smoking there was not allowed? Open air venue... Stuff em... What's the world coming too, not a better place that's for sure.
Re: bulldog
I think you have done a really nice job of making that pipe, faults or no faults.
Maybe the bowl is tilted too far forward? I don't know it sort of works.

Nice unusual looking pipe Steffan. With the sharp angles and lines is it comfortable to hold?
