Oh well... the only thing sure in life is it's dynamicism... constant change is a necessary ingredient for growth, but nothing is ever really lost. Time may hide things from us, but nothing is lost. I think it is sort of like the conservation of mass/energy... things that seem to disappear may not b...

NvilleDave, Sorry... just got my ass before my head. I have made rifles, as I have made pipes, and find them both fascinating. Physical storefronts are continually disappearing, and this is not necessarily bad... just evolution. But the pipemakers art will follow quickly, or will find new life... wh...

Alex, There is alot to be said for trusting your feelings on this. I think if you feel more comfortable using a certain tool as opposed to another, then you should. I even have a favorite chisel. It seems when you have a tool you prefer, you tend to use it more, and get further aquainted with its pa...

Alex, Hey... don't get me wrong... I love precision too. I used to machine metals to a ten-thousandth... and of course, the more precise you cut your pipes, the less likely you are to introduce errors. But I have never machined a stummel or stem to any more than a thousandth, I am sure. I also find ...

Alex, As Pipemanruss said, buy as large and as sturdy a model as you can afford and have room for. I don't think you will be dissappointed in choosing the press before a lathe. I am somewhat embarrassed to confess that I have turned a tennon on a pipe I repaired by chucking the tenon material in the...
Pipemanruss,
If you need some bees wax, let me know where to send it. I can send you some if you let me know your address. I guarantee it to be pure, since I harvest it myself.

Hey... if it is working to your satisfaction, problem solved. But wow... I sit here thinking about how you could run the entire shop with a motor of that size. Also, with a motor of that vintage, make sure you keep it lubricated, since they didn't make sealed bearings back then. Does it have cups fo...

Alex, I would personnally, buy a drill press first. Just my prejudice, but I find a drill press as versitile and utilitarian. But you also have to look at things as they are... a lathe is nothing more than a horizontal drill press, and a drill press is nothing more than a vertical lathe. Consider ho...

In my humble opinion, why don't you step it down through a secondary shaft, mounted with several pulleys? Unless you are working with extraordinarily limited space, you could even drive a mainshaft with that which could run many tool simutaneously. As far as your capacitor-starters go, they ony need...

Hello group.... I had to get in on this one. Have you considered a natural stain? Pumkin actually has a strong orange juice, which can be extracted easily by squeezing. Once squoze, take the juice and boil it in a stainless-steel pan for a few minutes to boil off some of the water, and the mix it wi...
