Re: Bleaching Briar

Thanks for your input, Walt. I agree that there may be harmful ways of bleaching/staining pipes, and I would like to find the "best" way to do it, which would mean the right compromise between safety and effectiveness. Ultimately though, nothing is 100% safe, and we are smoking tobacco, so...

Bleaching Briar

Has anyone tried bleaching briar?

I'm currently working on a Cutty, which is supposed to emulate the look of an old clay pipe, and I got wondering what it would look like if I also tried to emulate the colour to some degree... Thoughts?

Thanks!

How It's Made: Dunhill Pipes

Not sure if anyone has come across this little video, but it's a brief insight into the Dunhill factory: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYnTrQDhGTk

Bowl Coating Magic

Hi Folks,

All the bowl coating recipes I've seen have no quantities on them; they just list ingredients. (For example, this one.) Are they typically mixed in 1:1 ratios? Is it something you just have to figure out for yourself? Any tips from you guys who regularly coat your bowls?

Thanks,
Greg

Re: Third Pipe - Criticism Appreciated

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

It was, indeed, a pre-drilled block.

I was attempting to copy a picture I found online, if that gives any context: http://www.finepipes.com/images/Dunhill ... Author.jpg

Third Pipe - Criticism Appreciated

Hello Folks, This is my third attempt at a pipe, and my first briar pipe (the previous two were maple). It was a request from a friend for a bent author. It's all done by hand since I don't yet have a lathe. Your comments and criticism would be most appreciated. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g13...

Re: Tobacco Jar vs. Humidor?

Thanks Dave! That answered a lot of questions. But I'm still wondering what makes cigar tobacco so different from pipe tobacco that such a different level of humidity is required for storage... Could it be the curing process or the type of tobacco used? I'm afraid I'm not much of a cigar smoker, or ...

Tobacco Jar vs. Humidor?

Hello Folks, On a recent trip to my local tobacconists' (Blatter & Blatter in Montreal), I noticed several large, beautifully painted tobacco jars that were on sale. They also have a substantial selection of cigars, and presumably humidors. It got me thinking, what is the difference between the ...

Re: a change of direction...

Yes, best of luck with the clock! It's great to change up the sort of hobbies one is working on to keep things fresh and interesting.

I myself also have a plan to build my own clock movement from scratch. Maybe some day when I've had enough of pipes for a while, I'll make like you. :D

Re: the future pipe smokers???

I know this is an old topic, but it's no doubt still as relevant as ever. This article on increasing use of tobacco pipes in US colleges might be of interest: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123509294170728733.html Maybe there is hope for a future generation of pipe smokers. I myself am probably you...

Loose Tenon

Hi Folks, I was working away at my first pipe, which you can see in the photo below, and I realized that the stem is probably too loose. Is there any clever way of fixing this, or is the choice between living with it or getting a new stem? FYI, it's a pre-molded vulcanized rubber stem I got from Pim...

Re: "Tug" and "Lifeform" pipes by Mike Messer

Hi Folks, Beautiful pipes! I really love the way the dynamic grain twist helps the Lifeform pipe look alive! I was wondering if someone might be able to clarify, what exactly is a condensation chamber? Is it just a gap between the stem tenon and the pipe mortise where vapours condense? Or something ...

Re: A brief procedure on the use of delrin tenons

Well, the preferred material is ebonite - as in an integral tenon made of the same material as the rest of your stem. However, if you do not have the tooling to cut integral tenons, delrin is a great way to make professional looking tenons that fit every damn time without fuss. I see! But Why delri...

Please forgive me for reviving an old topic...

I am curious, why is delrin the preferred material for tenons?

Thanks,

Re: Iroko, can I smoke in it?

Hi Folks, I'm new here, so I apologize if I'm continuing to stir the shit in this thread. Before I continue, I will defer to the wisdom of those who have been doing this longer than me, and say that I have not yet made a single pipe, so I am probably the least knowledgeable person here. Now, it seem...

Re: Stains, Oils, Dyes, Where do I start?

Hi Folks, Interesting discussion. I'm also just getting started in this art, and I have a potentially naive, related question: Do you finish the inside of the bowl, or just let the carbon do its magic once you start to smoke the pipe? I ask, because it seems that with a good, moisture impermeable se...
