Re: Moving stem logos...Ideas?

Thanks Staffwalker. That's a good suggestion. I tried something tonight which seems to have worked and it's a combination of your idea and mine. It sounds weird but here's what I did. I put a thin film of Aunt Jemima's buttermilk syrup on the stem then positioned the logo. Then I dusted it with talc...

Moving stem logos...Ideas?

I repair pipes and it's always a drudge to move some logos from the old stem to the new one. I've got a Jobey logo waiting for me but GBD logos are similar. It's a very tiny piece of metal. The hard part is getting the logo to stay put while heating it with a soldering iron so it will melt into the ...

Re: Jobey stem replacement

Had someone want me to replace the Jobey link with a more conventional tenon. I drilled the threads in the shank with progressively larger bits until the threads were smooth. Then took a delrin repair tenon and fit the threaded end to the stem mortise. Next turned a tenon to fit into the shank. Epox...

Re: New photographing method for pipes...

Swell! I get a little dizzy looking at it but if I close one eye...:). But seriously, how did you deal with depth of field? It seems relatively sharp even though parts of the pipe get further away and closer to the camera as it spins. Just curious.

Re: Expanding a delrin tenon...

I did expand a delrin tenon which I had turned just a hair too small. I used a scratch awl found at Ace Hardware. I warmed the tenon with an alcohol lamp then inserted the awl. Just kind of eyeballed it. Let it cool off. I think the tenon then contracted slightly. Had to do it one more time and let ...

Re: Expanding a delrin tenon...

Thanks for that. Appreciate it. Has anyone ever been able to expand a delrin tenon and get it to work?

Expanding a delrin tenon...

Haven't tried this yet but how does delrin react to heating and expanding with a Pimo tenon expander or the old heat and push against the wall technique? Anyone tried it?

Re: Always wanted a green pipe...

Believe it or not just got around to smoking something in this pipe. Breaking it in with McClelland Syrian Full Balkan. Nice smoke. Love the pipe. Sat out on my porch with a large can of Genessee Ale and the radio- listening to the news. After a hard days work... Aaaahhh....sublime.

Nate,
This pipe has a tactile factor of "11". It is inspiring, wonderful. A good overall description: BADASS! WOW! Great photography.

Re: Always wanted a green pipe...

Sanded the whole pipe to 600 grit. Sanded the stummel back to 320. Dyed with Fiebings black alcohol based dye diluted to dark grey. Sanded that down to the contrast with 400 then 600 then dyed again with kelly green diluted. Buffed with white diamond and then carnauba wax then buffed on empty wheel....

Re: Always wanted a green pipe...

St. Patrick's day is probably the best time to smoke a green pipe. This is the day I always wish I had one. Of course there are other times when you just feel lucky too. Thanks for all the comments.

Re: Always wanted a green pipe...

Cutting grass and pipe smoking sounds dangerous for me. I'll try it anyway. Thanks for the comments. Always appreciate it. Could use any other critical comments you may have about the bowl and shank shape or anything else that looks wrong. One thought I had was to put some kind of treatment like car...

Always wanted a green pipe...

Yeah. I'm green too. This is my third pipe waxed yesterday. I know the stem is too long but I sure enjoy the shape, color, and grain. This is my first attempt at contrast staining. What do you think? Feel free to comment. Thanks. http://i1205.photobucket.com/albums/bb432/jimcrack/Pipes/GreenPipe-120...

Both pipes are truly beautiful and unique! The first one just has so much tactility going for it. The second one has an intriguing simplicity and gracefulness at the same time. Bravo.

Re: #2...Rusticated Volcano!

Thank you, Sasquatch. You are correct about the dremel bits. I used two different sizes. The larger one to make an uneven surface and a smaller one to make the dimples. Think you're right about the stem.I used a pre-fab stem for this. I'd like to get set up for cutting my own stems. And probably wil...

Re: #2...Rusticated Volcano!

This pipe is a volcano. It's shaped like a hill with a hole where the smoke comes out. I've seen bent volcanos and straight volcanos. Some are very short, some are tall and thin. About the only thing they have in common is that they are wider at the bottom and taper to the top of the bowl. Thanks fo...
