Re: Flaws driving me nuts!
Don’t let the flaws drive you. Ignore them for now and make good shapes. Ignore the grain except when you line up the design before drilling and shaping. Plan on making every pipe a rough dark finish but after it is all shaped if it has a nice grain with minimal flaws make it smooth. I wish I would ...

Re: PITH 2018!!!!
What stem material are we using,or is it open It should be kept traditional, ie. ebonite/vulcanite, acrylic and its variants, juma. No wooden stems or anything too unusual. I'm going to say no stems made of bakelite, briar, or horn as there are inherent issues with these materials for stems that on...

IAWG Howdy, all -- Manny asked me to break the voting tie for this year's PITH shape. So, here you go: Author Why? Two reasons. By definition the PITH is a learning exercise, so a commonality of problems faced---and their solutions explained here on the board---will apply to, and benefit, ...

Ramping or keyholes are also meant for unobstructed airflow in addition to the passing of a pipe cleaner.

Re: Anyone made Similar? Architect - by Dirk Heinemann
I recall seeing similar shapes made for Wally frank in the 1940s or earlier and Rolando Negoita has made many as well back in the 2000s. It can be drilled similar to a hawk bill where the ramping is opposite in the mortise. A keyhole can be avoided.

Slop in chucks should not produce an angle. How are the tower jaws mounted to the chuck jaws?

Re: Buffing Wheel Finish
For buffing, around 1800 rpm with the linen/flannel wheel for all three compounds. Practice and technique. Keep at it. Buffing can have a high learning curve if you do not have prior experience with something similar.

Until you are able to get better equipment and tooling, you can learn some skills with file, sandpaper, your hands, and eyes to correct what your tooling cannot achieve. These basic skills will be very beneficial later on as well.

Grind a used up airway drill flat so it will fit freely in the slot and test your opening.

Re: Stem air hole size
Premal, So you could use a 1/8" bit for the entire draught hole, even in the shank? Then just make sure the slot is opened up as wide as possible? You could and the pipe would smoke fine for most people. In my opinion it's good to have a larger hole in the briar to account for swelling and res...

Re: Stem air hole size
Quite a few of the cherished old English have 1/8 airways. And many highly regarded danish makers too. For airflow, if the slot is opened properly to the airway, 1/8 is plenty for good airflow. 5/32 is almost overkill when the slot is opened all the way to the airway properly, but most are not so th...
