This is some Doc'esque ingenuity.
Also, after looking at these photos, I find myself wondering how fine of a suit you would have made had you gone the tailor/seamstress...seamster (I don't know) route versus the pipe repairman.

Jesus, George! You really do have to stop saying you're not a pipemaker. Reminds me of a similar recent experience. I've been hitting the speaker circuit teaching/talking about ultrasound anatomy relative to vascular access and I always start my talks with, "I'm an educator not a public speake...

Re: Pipe #15. Pencil Shank Billiard.
For what it's worth, I don't think this is a "thin" shank. It looks aesthetically accurate for the pipe. If the shank were longer, then I think you might should have gone a bit thicker with a greater taper, but given the shorter length of the shank, I think it looks well balanced.

Re: Internal shank repair
Sweet. Your inner repairman is starting to emerge. Soon, you will categorically reject the merest thought connected with making new pipes, and spend all your time doing repair work. And all your sleep time dreaming about it. This is your future. Do not resist. Happiness awaits. As I read this, I pi...

Re: My first briar
I mean, if you are wanting to go for a classical billiard, then there are definitely some things that would need to be changed. That said, however, for what it is, the proportions are really nice. Personally, I'm really enjoying the more dramatic taper from the shank/bowl transition to the stem. I'm...

Well...What's the consensus of those who went? Obviously, I didn't as I'm sure you are all well aware.
Seriously though, what's your take? Does the future look bright? How was the new venue?

Re: How many "file-made pipes" before upgrading to lathe?
First pipe I made was drilled on an old Craftsman drill press that was probably about 70 years old and completely shaped with rasp, files and sandpaper...and not nice ones. May not be the easiest place to start, but the important thing is that you do just that...start. Learn from it, and press forwa...

So, for what I am able to critique based off of your photos, here's what I got. Rustication is pretty ok. Reminds me of a Savinelli Roma. It would greatly benefit from a finish. Try a heavily thinned shellac mix on rustication. Say 70/20 with denatured alcohol. I like to use on of those little craft...

Ho-Lee-CRAP! What unicorn butt did you scavenge to find that block or briar??? Is the shank/stem junction on a curve? What sorcery is that? This is fantastic, George. Really something else.

In this case a firm grip, and decent rasp, along with patience and a lack of fear of scraped knuckles will be at least one way to go at it.Artemisius wrote: ↑Mon Dec 13, 2021 6:52 pm thank you, this time for real right now i don't have enough money to buy a lathe, so i will try by hand
