Re: Churchwarden = wonderful education

LOL you missed a certain fairly well known "internet sensation" carver post a terrible billiard on facebook, saying "Jeez I dunno what you guys think is so hard about these." only to be torn into teensy weensy pieces by Bill Shalosky. Ah, good times. I missed that one, but it so...

Who's idea was the stem inlay? Does it mean anything or is it just cool looking?
I hope so. So far things look pretty dang good.

I'm interested in the inlay as well.

Re: First foray into pipemaking.

If I could only have one cheap tool in which to rough shape a pipe, I believe it would be a rasp. So, I suggest getting a rasp. And reading this forum. Good job taking the plunge.

Re: Billiard #2

The bottom view looks pretty good. Nice symmetry. One thing to work on, and something that is probably the hardest part for me on a billiard, are the cheeks. As yours sits, it's too cylindrical. Give the ole girl a few curves. Noting drastic, just a little junk in the trunk, and some wider hips. You...

Maybe 1/8" longer, but as you have it in the pic, it's better. Good job.

Re: Critique for another crappy pipe?

Overall, this shows improvement from what I remember of your past work. Nice job. As for critique, I'll start with the rustication. IMO this type of rustication (I assume done with a ball bur on a dremel?) looks better when there aren't really any smooth spots left. So just keep going with it. The b...

Re: #20 Bent Squat Tomato

The bowl seems too big for the rest of the pipe/out of proportion. The stem's button also seems big. Looks as though it could slimmed down by nearly half of its thickness front-to-back. I also think the barrel of the stem could be about half the length. As it is, it looks almost exactly the same len...

Re: First attempt at bent billiard

Should have removed more? Yes and no. In this case you removed too much in some places and not enough in others (that's not to knock your effort). For instance, There should be more material on the bottom of the shank and the shank's line should carry into the bottom of the bowl. As it sits, there ...
