Re: Alligator Wood
Only reference to Alligator Wood on Google is “Alligator Juniper”. One site said “This wood is wonderfully fragrant with a cedar like aroma – burning or not! Medium hardness, good mixer. Alligator juniper is excellent in the fireplace or backyard fire pit with a cozy lively fire with crackle, pop an...

Re: Shank ring with flat bottom?
I would; 1. Put a flat on a on a band, parallel pliers work great. 2. Cut a hard wood dowel or two, to shape and fit band. 3. Cut shank to fit band using dowel size as pattern. Remember the band will enlarge during shaping. I find it much easier to size the shank to fit an odd shape band than the re...

Re: Newbie questions
Rikki Sixx As you can see this is primarily a briar community, I haven’t made a meerschaum pipe since the seventy’s. If you’re planning to make a few pipes for yourself starting with a meerschaum kit is fine . It’s not really harder than briar just different, in fact in some ways it easier. My secon...

Re: Out of the blue proposition...
Drilling the draft hole would be fairly straight forward using the freehand method. Would like to know what all the black gunk is though? Filler maybe? If you look at the two on the right, Filler yes! It could be so soft it needs to be removed and replaced or so hard it will need to be carefully ru...

Wut? Translated with Bin...

Re: Briar for Cheap?
Vermont Freehand has briar starting at $5.00 a block. His blocks seem to be larger than others that I’ve seen. I started with twenty of his $5.00 blocks Grade 3 Plateaux and Grade 1 Ebauchons.

I have received responses from makers I highly respect Thank you Disclaimer: I’ve been on this forum for over three years now; I make ugly pipes, I’m working on that, I have also been working on training my eye, as to what makes a great pipe. I don’t think I could make a pipe this excellent if I mad...

Re: What would you make?
I don't know what you think you see, but I think so all the same. Is it the flattened top line? The insert tenon? The ridiculous briar? I would assume that the flattened top line of the stem was intentional and it is obviously done flawlessly (to my eye), The insert(s) is (are)well executed and I t...
