Peterson Stem, instant oxidation

Hi, A friend used some pipe cleaning fluid on the steam of a brand new Peterson Deluxe shape 05. The result was instant oxidation, the thing is almost green. A few drops of olive oil helped but the stream is still gray/green instead of black. Current options looks to be a) Replacement steam from Pet...

Re: Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

If you use the bleach method there are some things to be mindful of. On low quality stems, the bleach will eat them up. I tried this on an old no name pipe a couple years ago and after 30 minutes in bleach the stem had dissolved so much that it was useless. If you have a stem of questionable qualit...

Re: Cut on the Pull

Just don't try to hold a small v-shaped piece of metal with one hand while using a power drill with the other to enlarge a hole _just_ a tad... One of the stupidest things I did on my life. I was able to stop the blood with cold water and H2O2 but the sequent trip to ER was quite expensive and the s...

Most of your work makes me speechless. :-) But I check the pretty pics almost every day.

Re: Anone have the J.T. Cooke pipe making DVD?

Hi,

I'm in Portugal, Europe and I'd love to see that DVD.

But, instead of sending physical DVDs around the planet one could make an iso file and upload it to rapid share or something similar ?
I'll happily pay for it if the author posts his paypal account.

Re: I have to share one...

It's weird stuff. It doesn't handle heat from drilling/turning very well, so you have to go real slow and make sure your tools are sharp. Simeon, your pipe sucks, and you are a bozo. :P I was cutting some celluloid this morning, and the band saw blade bound just a little bit (just barely slowed), a...

Honestly I haven't even thought about that. I'm in Europe anyway but it might solve the problem.
Thank you.

Re: Question on polishing stem on an estate pipe

For me cleaning up a stem of an estate pipe with alcohol and some pipe cleaners is far from being enough (from the hygienic point of view). As most estate pipe I buy have highly oxidized stems anyway I put the stems in a bleach bath for 1 hour or so. This mean hand sanding before you can polish them...

Contacting PIMO ?

Hi,

I've been trying to contact PIMO about my first order (the book, stains and even a small pice of briar for me to play with) that never arrived, but I'm not getting any answer.
I'm trying to reach them at pimo@vermontel.net, does anyone have a better contact ?

Thank you.

There is plant called "Erica lusitanica" here in Portugal, but I never knew you could make pipes with it. Yes, if it's on CNN it must be true.

Actually, the most interesting celebrity for me here is Zero Mostel.

I have yet to make my 1st pipe, so take my comments with a a lot of grains of salt. I wish that my 10th pipe will be as good as this 2nd... :notworthy: Nice, nice work. Very beautiful shape and it's obvious that you know your way around wood. Does a wood stem works ok ? I hate the hardness of the ch...

So, Yes, the finishing affects the way the pipe smokes, QED. Unscientific psychosomatic quantum decoherent experimental process with unsupported conclusion. In other words, I disagree. I think it's a myth. Is not !!!!!!! 8-))) Ok, keeping it scientific. -> So, Yes, the finishing affects the way tha...

Re: Zinsser Spray Shellac

I've got some 90% iso, will that work to cut shellac or dissolve records? Probably not, you want denatured alcohol, which is 96% ethanol with some methanol added to kill you if you drink it. Gotta love prohibition-era rules for industrial alcohol... I like to just get a bottle of Everclear o...

Re: Metal arresters (or filters).

Here those stingers are called "arrefecedores" which translate to "coolers". The only ones that I allow to stay inside my pipes are the ones that don't stop a pipe cleaner (seen on Chacon Cordoba), all the others are removed. They might cool the smoke somewhat, maybe during 2 or ...

Re: Oxidized vulcanite stems

Using bleach and then alcohol to clean stems is redundant. Both are germ removal agents, but neither removes the oxidation. In fact, bleach leaves the oxidized remains of the germ cells it kills. Look it up. The only way to remove heavy vulcanite oxidation is with abrasion; scraping, filing, sandin...

Re: Need advice repairing a stem

Any patch will show. It's nearly impossible to match the original material in depth of color and hardness. Like putting a bow-tie on a pig - still a walking BBQ. Best thing to do is take that Dremel away from your friend...also any sharp objects! You are quite right... He did that because he felt t...

Re: Need advice repairing a stem

I'm still years away of being able to do something that loosely resembles a stem, I'm still playing with LEGO(TM) bricks ;-))) Yesterday I ordered the stains from PIMO, I will try to mix some black powder with epoxy, it don't have to be Frankenstein level, an Igor level repair will do. :-) Thanks guys

Need advice repairing a stem

Hi, A friend sent me this to see if I could help, he did the damage himself while trying to polish the stem, I don't know exactly what he did, it looks the work of a Drevil with a felt wheel but I'm not sure. The deep is about 1 mm but it looks that the material was burned away so I don't think that...

Re: Oxidized vulcanite stems

I've been using bleach with success. I'd rather prefer to get some residue than catch some bug from the stem. In one step you remove the oxidation and make dam sure that the stem is biologically clean. If using it pure than a bath of 15 or 30 minutes is enough, but it's better to mix it with the sam...

Re: Affect of Finish

I wish I could prof it but I can't, however this happened to me. In the early days I had 1 pipe, then got another one. This 2nd pipe was (and is) a Vauen 9mm, not that cheap but a bad pipe anyway. It goggled a _lot_, it was a black billiard with a not so thin shiny coat that I assume was some kind o...
