Re: #1008 and #1009
Maybe I am just a loon -but I think the rings arent bad. I like it. To your point/question however, could it be that the rings are a little bit high? Usually when I see rings - on a rhodesian for instance - the rings are placed at the apex or high point of a curve or transition. Your rings seems to ...

It almost looks like weathered sandstone! Very different - I like it as a change of pace.

Re: Squared Blocks!
If you needed to make some of that fundage back by selling a few or if you were interested in a trade for a fixed blade custom knife let me know. I am in need of some briar to completely screw up in my lame attempt at making pipes.

Re: Squared Blocks!
excellent looking briar. I had it set for a business trip to the Chicago area that would have allowed me to go to the show and it fell through last minute. That big lot of briar you got is exactly what I was hoping to find. Maybe not 159 pieces but then agian I am a weak man...

Without a doubt hickory or Osage Orange (boisd'arc) as my first choices. Locust is pretty tough or maybe ash as a second chice.

Re: Initial Efforts
Love the chubby look of the second pipe. It looks very comforting to hold in the hand. Having worked as a development engineer in medical devices I tend to approach things from a functional and ergonomic standpoint first followed by the aesthetic. It has been true for my knives and now my pipes as ...

I like the overall look of the first one ,and you got there some very sharp looking damaskin blades . Thank you very much, Abi. Hhmmm....You got some very yummy looking olive wood there......if you were looking for a "sharp looking damaskin blade" a guy might be looking to do some trading...

Re: Initial Efforts
Philthy, I really like both of them. My only comment on the first one is the gap on the stem where you can see the tenon..... You sir are absolutely correct. Or I should say, were correct. I did not like that either and (okay, not so promptly) counterbored a bit and gap/visible tenon are no more. ....

2nd pipe
Okay that seemed to work - must be my lucky night. My second pipe started as a bargain bin ebauchon from PIMO. I successfully drilled the bowl and draught holes using a spade bit I ground on my KMG grinder. I think I did a better job in shaping. Added a 12ga. brass and a hand filed stem from an acry...

Initial Efforts
I have been meaning to post my first efforts at making pipes for some time now. I do not wish to simply be a lurker or not have something to put out there in support of any comments I might wish to make. I have only held off due to the inability to upload images. I finally got around to creating a s...

Re: new ebonite sources?
I would be interested in enough for 2-3 stems just to try it out. I would not want a large quantity till I tried it.pennsyscot wrote:Definitely not the same stuff that PME sells. I don't like it. Anyone want to buy some ebonite?

Re: Mammoth tooth
+1 on Uncle Arthurs comment. It should be hadnled like stone and is usually already fractured/cracked as well as prone to additional cracking. The fact that it should be faced/glued on at least one side with a more stable material should help.

Re: Discussion, briar, burl, wood.
The Mountain Laurel is a wild tree that is native to the U.S. and has a burl that is suitable for pipemaking. It grows all over the place around me. I believe that U.S. pipe factories used it at one time. I thought about trying to use it. However, the process of boiling blocks and then properly cur...

Re: Lathe Chucks
I have not seen that type of jaw for the Nova G3 that I have. There is a spigot jaw set that is taller and has aggressive grooves cut in it, but the jaws have a round radius shape. Anyone have experience with these jaws and can say how they work before I buy a set or know where I could find somethin...

Making wooden lathe jaws
I thought I had seen a video of someone bolting on some wood to their existing chuck and turning it down a bit to use in turning pipes. I have looked and used the search engine but I cannot find it now that I purchased a Jet lathe and Nova chuck. Anyone recall this or have some feedback on this meth...

Re: Nose warmer
Okay I am a newb but...I actually like the flair and the fit/flow into the shak looks great. I do agree with Sas about the curve both on top and underside of the shank. Especially on the underside coming from the stem it looks like it dips in then flairs slightly then dips in again and finally back ...

Re: disc sander backing plate
I use my 2x72 KMG for rough shaping too, as I'm too cheap to get a disc and I was grinding on steel long before I started on briar... Phil, have you ever tried using the slack belt setup and splitting J-flex belts into thinner widths? I have found that a slack 1/2" x 72 belt at near-bow...

Kurt, thanks very much for the breakdown. I will get around to it and I will contact you I am sure. Need to catch up on some knife orders first. Then there is that nasty pipe making side project thing that sidelined me (still sidelining me) That damn day job thing is getting in the way of my project...
