Re: Craggy Apple
Jeremiah, Not a lot bigger, just a little more meat on the button. I tried the same thing in making my buttons as small and streamlined as possible and, like I said, I took a beating over it at a show. A little bit more ebonite right there shouldn't affect the comfort level at all and I would hate t...

Re: Craggy Apple
The button is too small. Well executed, but far too small for someone to comfortably clench. Keep the same proportions and thickness behind the button, but make it about 50% larger in every direction. That is not correct. The pipe itself is quite large. The button is about 17mm across and about 5.5...

Re: most smoked shop pipes
Hopefully, everyone feels that way. If your pipes don't get better over time you're not trying. A great exercise is to look back at older pipes and do some self critique. If you can't look at a pipe you made a few months ago (if you are new at it) or a few years ago (if you have been at it longer) a...

Very high grit glass bead. Grainger has it for a decent price if you have one near you.

Re: Which saw do you use for bit?
Jigsaw blades are slightly thicker than hack saw blades. Both have to be shaped appropriately but the jigsaw blades are closer to 1/16 in thickness.

No idea about tobaccanists but Lagunitas Brewing is located there and they are one of the best breweries in the country, IMO.

Re: Good article on cutting-edge pipe design
I agree that all those mentioned in the article are amazing artisans who are doing things I can't. My only issue with all the avant garde stuff is that innovation is not always necessary or an improvement (think "Delorean", or the fashion industry). Sure it took some skill to turn chicken ...

The short answer is : whatever grit you need to get out the scratches from your previous tools/paper. If you have used a file start with 150 or 180.

Re: Stem knives?
Many just use a triangular file that they have ground to semi-sharpness on the edge. The triangle file is much more stable than an actual knife edge. I am not this good with it but I have watched someone who is shape the stem with a file, smooth and remove tool marks with the blade and go directly t...

I didn't realize we'd ever met in person, but I'm glad to know that we're friends, what with us both "keepin' it real" and all.
