Re: 2nd crack at squashed tomato. this time with cocobolo

looking at high end pipes and going to pipe shows are both tough... rural vermont is a tough place to see that kind of quality... Read through every post in this gallery and the critique offered. After a few hundred threads you'll start noticing stuff on pipes you would have previously thought were...

I see that now. In my mind I was thinking of the proportions of a prince (and a pot I have that mimics them). Could similar proportions work on a billiard? Would that be a stem twice as long as the stummel?

Re: #19 - Billiard

Am I right in noting that this is halfway between a classic billiard (50/50) and a bing? The stem has been called too long, but could it also be too short? What's the proper ratio for a bing?

Nice work. You can really see the growth rings even though it's a smooth. Does anyone know if there is a process reason behind this, or is it just inherent in the block itself?

Re: #16 - Bent billiard

What would totally take this pipe from being a nice pipe to a great pipe is the bottom line of the shank. On a bent pipe, the shank line needs to swoop lower. Basically, you need to connect the curve coming down around the bottom of the bowl to the curve in the stem in one, continuous curve. Great ...

Re: Advice on taking commissions

This is really interesting. If I may tag along with this post since it's on topic, what is your ideal level of contribution from a buyer on a commission? How much is too much? Obviously Sasquatch's example is extreme, but would the following be too much? -3/4" or 13/16" chamber width -5&qu...

What about 'blastication' with the texturing wire wheels from that other thread?

Re: Help With Tool List

Steve from Vermont Freehand made three kits for me for not much money at all. I made the designs, picked stems from his stock on eBay, and he picked and drilled the blocks and turned tenons for me for $66 total. I finished one (my avatar) and am working on the second (no winter work because of class...

I'd call it a poker. I've always used poker and cherrywood interchangeably. It does have the conical bowl of a Dublin, though.

Re: Anyone ever use a bristle blaster?

I'm impressed. You want to do an experiment, sand it smooth again, then blast it in a cabinet and compare the two finishes. I particularly like the top. Or mask half the bowl, sand[paper] and blast the other half! A true side-by-side comparison. Years ago when I was first messing with rusticating e...

Re: How to stamp your name/logo

The reason I thought of this corker over a drill press is that in the videos I've seen (I can't remember which, but it was some factory like Dunhill or Peterson or something) the arm of the press wiggles back and forth as the shank is rolled to produce even stamping on the sides. I don't think a dri...

Re: How to stamp your name/logo

I've seen the presses used by factories for stamping in some videos, and since I already own one of these, I wonder if it could be easily rigged to apply a stamp and allow for the rocking motion.

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?

While this pipe needs a straight stem, when you do a bent pipe, give it a gradual curve, not one bent sharply in just one area.

P.S. This should be stickied!
