Re: What a year, basement "shop" slowly coming togethor
If the dodge could do horozontial as well as vertical then I am in. But as you can see I have a space issue. Otherwise I would just get two kmgs, be about the same price.

Re: What a year, basement "shop" slowly coming togethor
Yeah Kurt I would use the lathe for pivots and standoffs for frame and liner lock folders (and pipes of course).
I am seriously thinking about taking a year in the wife's dog house for this bad boy.

Re: A few blades I've done
Another steel geek!!! I've been resisting the stainless steels because, for practical hunting/survival use, I don't think they're well suited. You have to baby the edge, and if you do that, it's a major buzzkill. Take a blade of 5160 and you beat piss out of it on a hunting trip, and all...

What a year, basement "shop" slowly coming togethor
Hey guys, With a job promotion, new house, and baby girl all happening this year I haven't been able to creep on here as much as I would like. Plan to start getting back into the thick of things. While I have been focusing on getting my basement "shop" (almost and insult to real shops to c...

The briar slayer! Variable speed portaband, set up vertical. Great for titanium and steel too.

Re: Bandsaw blades
Have any of you guys tried a metal cutting bandsaw? I have wood and metal and I like the metal one better for briar. I haven't used it that much because I have been focusing on knives but from what I can tell my variable speed portaband cuts easier and safer. 10-14 TPI Ill post a pic.

I like them all and a few are amazing.
I wish I could produce some pipes half as good as these.
That being said, I really don't like the ring on the horn. It kills the flow.

Re: Can you become a great pipemaker and never buy a lathe
I think a more interesting question is actually "Can I become a great pipe maker even if I buy a $20,000.00 lathe?" You can make pipes on a drill press. Read the sticky on delrin tenons. After that, it's guts and determination and lots of sanding. A lathe makes things faster, to be sure. ...

Re: Should I buy this craftsman metal lathe?
AHHHH!
I am closing on a house in like 2 weeks, money is usually not too tight, but right now it is. I'll have to dip into the swiss fund for this one, if I can pull it off.
My wife is going to shit a brick...
Why does life always work like this? Ha!

Should I buy this craftsman metal lathe?
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/tls/2427463675.html Good buy? Keep in mind I know nothing about lathes (so limited in fixing/refurbishing). Guy says it runs good. Great price for a metal lathe. Of course the biggest downside it is only 6 swing. Pretty small but that could do some stummels, an...
Sounds like you need to move outside of DC ;)
Haha, true that. It is also my own fault. I like to make knives also, and am tooling up there. While there is a lot of crossover each has distinct tooling. The lathe is just going to be the hardest to pull off because of we...

Can you become a great pipemaker and never buy a lathe
Are there any great pipemakers that never used a lathe (Wally comes to mind {well i assume he doesn't use a lathe})? I just don't think living in the D.C. area will ever let me get the space I need for one. I like to think if I put the years in (and master the french wheel) I could make some nice pi...

Guys, I apologize if this topic is in here somewhere but the search ignores the word "hole" for me and only searches for "saw" which gives me a million posts. A year after I read it the first time, I read the PIMO pipemaking book again. Anyway, I didn't make note of this before ...

But 99.9% of pipes just don't have a perfectly round cylindrical bowl.
I'd work on learning how to shape pipes, so your not totally dependent on jigs and such.
