Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. Seems to me that the common suggestion I am hearing is to take off more wood. I'll keep that at the forefront of my mind on the next one. As I've said in previous posts, it is a learning process and hopefully each one will get a bit better.

if you are using a PC, try IrfanView, which is a free download - http://www.irfanview.com/

if you're on a mac, iPhoto has an export feature that lets you resize the photo...

great. thanks. so, what grit do I need to use?

So, I've looked for the answer to what is probably a stupid question, but can't find it.

I have a pipe that I buffed with carnauba wax without putting on any stain. I now think I want to see what it looks like with stain. Do I need to sand again before applying the stain?
