Re: not sure if stem or shank question...

Some people do use a forstner bit, but this one was made with lathe tools. A forstner won't give you results that are quite as professional. Well, none that I've seen will.

Re: stain influencing the stem fit

Although that sounds obvious at first, I quickly realised I don't sand my shank face after turning, as I've not mastered sanding it without ruining the stem fit... If you sand the face of the shank before turning the width of the shank to its final dimension, you won't have to worry about rounding ...

For the number of pipes he's made, Kent's work is very good. Greg Pease was showed me a pipe he bought from Kent at last year's KC show. I certainly understand the frustration expressed here, but I think there's another component and that is simply trust. Collectors want a lot of things, but a big p...

Re: Some advice?

I would just bevel or dome the rim. It's not ideal, but it's better than the gouge or topping the rim. Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about it; don't let it frustrate you. The first pipes you make are all about learning, and now you know a little more about drilling, etc.

You might contact RD Field or Steve Monjure. No idea if they would do something like that for you though.

Re: Form or Function Survey

Thanks for the participation so far, guys. I'd be happy to share the results once we have some more responses. Just so you know I'm too new to pipe making for over half of those questions to have any value from my answers. That didn't stop me from answering them though. I'm glad you did. One of the ...

Form or Function Survey

I had a discussion with another maker about how we all prioritize various aspects of pipe making differently. Some of us are driven by an artistic pursuit, and some of us only care about how the pipe smokes. I doubt any of us really view pipes as purely form or purely function enterprises, but I tho...

Re: Sandblasting help

The idea that you "need" a two-stage is not quite right imho. I agree; most of this is just a question of how much time you're willing to spend on sandblasting. It is possible to blast with a 30 gallon compressor, but I'm not saying you're doing something wrong. I'd guess there's another ...

Re: Sandblasting help

I looked at my compressor and my issue could be my CFM is only 7! It's a 30 gal compressor too. My first compressor was 30 gal too. It will work, but it takes *forever* for it to refill...at least mine did. you might try blasting the side of an unfinished block - like Premal said, you'll occasional...

Dear Southwest Airlines,
I regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, I am compelled to cancel my flight to Chicago. It appears that certain unsavory types will be in the city the same time as my planned visit. I'm certain you understand.

Kind Regards,
Mango

Re: 2nd attempt, be gentle!

This is just fine for a second attempt, but if you're looking to make pipes regularly, you would make more and faster headway by just making basic pipes at the beginning. Of course, if you just plan on making a few pipes, then have at it! Either way, good luck.
