A hobbyist says hello

Hi all, I don’t post, or lurk, online very much. I make up for it by talking even less in the real world. I am a hobbyist, I live in Puyallup, WA. I make a pipe when I have time: after a full time job, wife and 3 kids, and everything that comes with a busy life. I’ve been making pipes for about 5 or...

Re: Playing favorites

Rad Davis. I’ve been off in commission world for months and only make a couple pipes a month on average so I’m not online much regarding pipes (I’ve got two pipes for my site in the works though and will likely post them in the gallery when done so I may join in the commentaries again as well). That...

Re: Super Duper Ultra Extreme Mega Secret

I haven’t posted in a few months so I hope it’s ok if I hop in with a question. I made this pipe about a dozen pipes ago, so I’d expect to improve upon it now, but also as a second iteration I tend to do better. The well\drain is functional. Would this count as a Cavalier for the contest rules? http...

Re: Cherrywood

The bowl could use a little more forward momentum. Not in my opinion. I wanted it like this, I wasn't trying to do an exact copy and to be honest I very rarely see a pipe where the bowl sort of bends forward that looks good. Premal (I think) posted one that is the exception proving the rule to me ;...

Re: Cherrywood

I started to disagree and say that this is loosely based off of a Becker and that's how he does it. I went to go get a pic to show you, like this: http://assets.smokingpipes.com/images/products-hr/002-007-0577_1.jpg Then of course looking at the pic I see exactly what you meant. :) It's a small amou...

Cherrywood

Odd thing, on my pc and on my phone these pics look fine, however on my daughter's laptop and feedback from a couple folks on my mailing list they are too dark. It's already sold and on the way to the post office this morning so if the pics are too dark, my apologies. Weight: 2.0g or 57g Bowl Max He...

Re: Whistle Tampers

I think I'm going to start including a free whistle tamper with each pipe I sell, I've gotten some really great feedback from my mailing list and sold a couple as well. Anyhow, plain old wooden whistles are really easy but I'll warn you to make a few because all of your daughter's friends are going ...

Re: Whistle Tampers

:) Well a trained dog app. My dog is trained but not to a dog whistle. He comes when I call him, but when I blow the whistle I just think it's working because his ears twitch and he looks around... but he's my dog after all so that means he is quirky and odd in the first place... so he sort of twitc...

Re: Whistle Tampers

Thanks guys :) Can you make one that works on dogs? Sometimes they get too caught up in what's living in the bushes to want to come back in. Sure, you just move the notch down to vary the pitch. I already promised a dog whistle version to one of my regulars with his next pipe. I'll have to figure ou...

Whistle Tampers

I finished up a pipe a couple days ago using some Madrona wood as an inlay: "Marmalade on a short stack" http://www.billboylepipes.com/uploads/8/9/3/2/8932036/8299552_orig.jpg and I thought Madrona might make a nice little tamper too. Well, I had just made a bunch of those little wooden wh...

Re: Madrone Wood?

Hey all, I did use a little bit of that Madrona as a stem inlay and thought someone might want a look: http://www.billboylepipes.com/uploads/8/9/3/2/8932036/1822244_orig.jpg The above pipe was sold very discounted to my mailing list but I think I will use this stem treatment again soon, and will pos...

A little summer time fun

I've been pushing myself with my pipes lately, the day job is stressful, I got the usual with wife and kids as well. So here it is mid-summer and I thought since I was caught up on commissions now would be a good time to just take a break, have a beer, and make some weird hobby thing that would put ...

Is the slot too tall for the bite behind the button? Giving too thin of material even though behind the button is within spec?

Heck I dunno, beauty pipe! I just want a point, lol

Re: A Castello 293 Riff

I think the idea has some potential. The part that I don't think works is the tenon sticking out like it does. Having a gap between the shank and stem would work well, I think, if you repeat the line on the shank face on the stem. Also, it looks like you've got a pinch on the bottom line of the stu...
