Old Pipe Needs Repair

Hello, I just found one of my grandfathers pipes he gave me when I was about 5 years old. It's a bent billiard by Barclay-Rex. I am surprised it is in as good as shape as it is after what I remember doing to it throughout the years. I was young, stupid, and not a pipe smoker then so don't beat me up...

Sanding pads

I've decided to go the route of the sanding pad in shaping. Was wondering where those of you who use them, get them? Also what grits do you use?

Storing Tobacco

What's the best way to store pipe tobacco once you open the tin? I normally smoke the tin within a week or two so I've never had any problems, but since I've been pipe making I've been keeping a lot more variety around and some of it is getting a bit dry.

Re: Reformed Meerschaum?

To be honest, I've never smoked a meerschaum so I wouldn't know what they smoke like. I'm assuming it's similar to a clay.

Marking out a block

Hello everyone, Thanks again for all your help. I have made a few pipes now and they are definitly starting to look better. However I am having difficulty finding a good way to mark out a block for drilling. I am using a small combination square when I do it, but I can't seem to get that awesome dra...

Re: Reformed Meerschaum?

Someone bought me one of these kits recently for my upcoming birthday. Feels like ordinary meerschaum to me. The kit doesn't tell you how to carve it, just how to seal it once it's carved. I'm assuming I can go to town on it with plaster/clay tools. I'll let you know when I get around to carving it.

Re: Drew Estate

Well I occasionally enjoy the Root, Dirt, and Juicy Lucy. I've taken the challenge of the Egg once and thought it was amazing, though I don't have the patience to sit through another one. My girlfriend loves the Dirt and is always stealing them from my humidor. I've more or less switched over to pip...

"What the F*** are you doing now?!"
Ah the memories. If I had a nickle for everytime my mother or girlfriends said that. Well...I'd have a good size workshop to put it all.

Re: Wierd taste

The Tobacco is Nat Sherman #307 and I've smoked many a pipe of it, from this bag, without a problem. So I doubt it's that. The material of the pipe is briar. The stem is ebonite. I washed my hands. I lit it with a lighter. Not really sure what else I can say. All the bits and stuff I used I keep sep...

Re: Wierd taste

Actually it's one I made. Well drilled but ugly as sin so don't expect any pictures. I wiped it down good, and hit it with the airhose and a pipe cleaner. The salty taste didn't appear until about 1/2way into the bowl. And then it was every so often I got a mouthful of it. I'm assuming it's burning ...

Thank you for all your advice. I used it on another pipe today and the stem fit perfectly! The thing smokes like a dream, but looks ugly as sin. So I'll have to try again on the looks.

What the hell?! I live here and haven't heard of this! What the hell?! What's going to happen to Nat Shermans? Davidoff? All the others?! This is ridiculous!!! And check me if I'm wrong but isn't all tobacco flavored? I mean anything you can stick in your mouth is flavored! :filth-n-foul: :filth-n-f...

Re: Help! Stem has a gap:-(

I have a nice old school drill press I got from my grandfather. It has a great vice on it too. It has served me well for a while now and has that awesome vintage green look and sexy art deco lines. I will look into those lathes you suggested and might try and am considering talking my old shop out o...

Re: Help! Stem has a gap:-(

Yeah, I've been shopping around for almost a year now. Also my job has me moving around every couple of years so I'm hesistant to set up anything more than a basic basement shop if I have to pack up heavy tools and ship them.
