Re: Ready for Spoon Bits?

I initially expressed interest but that is a little more than I can justify with my small production of about 25 a year. I am sure they are wonderful, though, and hope to get some in the future.

Cool. Not a big deal, but my thumb and forefinger have once or twice proven themselves unreliable.

There has to be a joke in there somewhere ....

Not bad at all. My first one was still kind of square, and looked like a block with a stem on it.

Re: Tenon chamfering procedure

To chamfer the outside of the tenon a bit I use nail files from a beauty supply store while the stem is turning in the lathe. They are also great for filing on the stem and come in many grits. The countersink tool from pimo works great to chamfer the inside of the tenon just a bit. Just a light touc...

Measuring Bowl Bottom Thickness

Has anyone come across a tool that would allow for the easy measurement of bowl thickness at the bottom? My digital caliper is useless for this task, so what I do now is measure the depth of the bowl, the height of the bowl, and then subtract. This works okay, but it sure would be nice to just take ...

The hardest thing to learn when first starting out is that it is okay to keep going, and remove a lot of wood. That looks like a nice block.

Re: Briar Round Up

Great post, and thank you. Your experience is similiar to my own. I was a big fan of the PME algerian, and now have been branching out to ordering from Jaume and Mimmo since the PME tuscan just seems too expensive to me, and a little on the small side. Transactions with both have been easy and the b...

Re: The New Shop. "A Work In Progress"

Nice shop, and a nice dog. I heartily recommend a good dog for any pipemaker. Let's face it, no one else is going to stay in there with you for hours and hours and be happy with the occassional pat on the head.

Really nice, and congratulations on No. 100. Would look great next to the crown jewels in the Tower of London, or wherever they keep them. :)

Re: Well... lets give it a go...

Good start. Just keep sanding. The bowl in particular has a nice (if still unfinished) shape for a first pipe. Mine ended up about as square as the briar block, which is pretty common. Anyway, best of luck.

The justforhim.com Christmas blend might make a good alternative. I have been enjoying it and it does smell like Christmas, cloves included.

Man, I love this thread, although it is quickly leading to shop envy. Mine is a converted storage outbuilding with, so far, no insulation. A little cold in the winter ... The first picture shows my chief assistant. His job is to get me out of the house, and he is really good at that. http://i670.pho...

Re: Question: A good set of bits?

You will also need something to cut the slot in the end. I use a dremel with a cutting bit, and then a short 1/16 bit in the drill press to widen it out. You probably already knew that ...

Re: A Studdy Ingrain - "The Tilted Pot Story" by Mike Messer

On the price side of things I have taken the opposite approach. I started selling my pipes after I had made only five, the pipes were sold as the early pipes of a new pipemaker and I have kept my customers up to date on new methods I was using and how my work was improving. I took my customers on t...

That's a nice contraption. I have learned a lot about pipes and have sold quite a few now, but I still can't take a decent picture. The 14 menus on my camera leave my head spinning like a lathe. :)

Re: Pipes possibly causing loss of job for "parphanelia?"

I just saw this post and, man, that is ridiculous. Speaking as a lawyer (which I piddle with when I am not making pipes), companies can generally fire you for any reason they want in most states, unless it is for a reason that violates civil rights (race, gender, etc.) or is in violation of a union ...
