Re: Dunhills worth the bucks?
I own a Dunhill and a Savinelli as well as a couple of pipes made by members of this forum. IMO the handmade pipes ar far superior to any of my other pipes including my high dollar Dunhill. I modified my Savinelli and it is a fine smoker now but even the pipes I have made smoke better.

Looks like it was done with a wire wheel to me. I tried this a while back. Mine did not turn out near that good but it did look kind of like that one.

Re: Sharpening and making Lathe Tools
I can only imagine what some of those things do. They look practically midevil. I am always interested in learning how to make things myself rather than buying them. It gets me into trouble sometimes and I spend way more money but I am hard headed that way. I think in this case I will purchase a set...

Sharpening and making Lathe Tools
Google comes backe with 101,000 results. From what I have read so far there seems to be different opinions on how to sharpen your tools. Some use jigs others say dont use jigs. Of course there are a bunch of specialty tools guaranteed to produce sharp edges but you know how that goes. Can anyone rec...

Re: steeltec?
Forgive me if I dont use the correct lathe jargen but yes it has a quick change gear box and a cross power feed. I had a Millwright friend of mine help me level it and it passed all his test for accuracy. Now I just have to figure out how to use it. PS I did drill a pipe with the milling attachment ...

Re: steeltec?
You're right though, unless you have machining and restoration expertise, the smartest thing to do is buy new. Well I hope I didn't screw up. I just purchased a Craftsman 12X36. They guy told me it was the last model Craftsman made. I know the guy and trusted him. I dont have any experience with la...

consistant taper
I am having trouble getting a consistant taper on my stems. I have a small belt sander with a 1 1/2" belt and was wondering if it would be easier with a wider belt sander?

Re: Developing one's palate
Byzantium seems to have a flavor similar to *very* aged Penzance (as in 10+ years old) Byzantium wil be in my next order!!! I used to think I was the only one, and the sometimes elitist attitude of folks that smoke "nothing but the finest lightly cured virginia flake" didn't help things e...

Just wanted to introduce myself
Howdy from the Piney Woods of East Texas. I started making pipes around 8 months ago. Every question I could think of had already been answered on this forum so I have spent a lot of time searching and reading. Mostly at work :whisper: . Out of the ten of so pipes I have made only a couple have been...

Re: Developing one's palate
Ah...my first post. I agree with everyone here but I would stongly suggest staying away from those Open jars of tobbacco sold in your local B&M tobacco store. Stick with a quality brand. IMO GL Pease not only provides quality tobacco they do a pretty good job of describing each blend. I have tri...
