Re: Poor smoker...

Put a funnel on the end of that tenon would be my first thought, and see how pinched that airway is from bending... did it collapse? Is it full of crumbs/roughness? The off center drilling in the bowl is nothing. This one it's all stem. Thanks! It does look like the airway is a bit collapsed... it ...

Re: Poor smoker...

I’d like to add I have concerns about the tenon walls being too thin but it’s a trade off between thinner tenon wall or poor air flow...

Poor smoker...

Hi all... I’d appreciate some input on this pipe and my thought process to improve the smoking of it. it is a good friend’s that called it an $80 paperweight. It’s a Cassini Milano briar with rubber stem. Draught is slightly off center to bowl but nothing major to report. So here’s what I’m planning...

Re: The fire’s on the outside of this pipe...

Working on this triple contrast partial blast... the customer said they want it to look like fire is burning through as it’s for a fireman... so naturally a sandblast finish oriented just right did the trick!

I printed this and am making my notes on the printed sheets, You could re enter it with nice littles spaces for notes.[emoji3] I think that it can be a most useful tool to encourage and enlighten a newer pipe maker. Again, thanks DocAitch Love the idea! I’m going to do it tonight....! Sent from my ...

Re: Slot Cutting

I have a couple of bits I use for this. I do not know where they came from. They are not side cutting bits. They look like normal bits. But they side cut extremely well. Before I found them in my large pile of (mostly trash) bits, I was considering buying some side cutting ones but these work so we...

PITH 2020 Review

Hi all I’m a team director by profession and I always try to standardize reviews for my teams for two reasons... so that they’re consistent and so that the info reviewed is positive and able to be used to grow. So here’s what I put together for feedback on the pipe I received and wondered if any exp...

Slot Cutting

OK, so I used this jig for about 20 stems and the following problems have become apparent. 1) unless the Dremel is very carefully kept in the same plane, the internal surface of the funnel gets sloppy and uneven, and if you really fall asleep, you can cut a false passage. 2) the height of the slot ...

Re: Canted bowls...

Look at the angle pipes "hang" when clenched. No one bites and holds them so the shank is level, not even close. The angle is usually around 30-40 degrees. Then add chamber angle to it, and a canted bowl's chamber wall above the airhole spends a lot of its time approaching horizontal. Now...

Re: Canted bowls...

I am not sure that I see exactly what concerns you. I do see irregularities in the chamber surface that appear to be tear out from your bowl cutter, and there is an area on the left side of the chamber which may be incipient burn out. Each of those edges from the tear out is a potential point of ig...

Canted bowls...

I read recently about someone who was working to fit a bowl to a thin heel and I think it was docaitch who said the problem would be that you could end up charring the stem side wall... I had a pipe I made recently start to burn through on that side, had a canted bowl, and is being used by a hot smo...

Re: August goal... 15 stems in 31 days

Hmmm... interesting idea. However, I wouldn’t get hung up on how many you can make in a given amount of days. Instead, I would focus on the different aspects of stem cutting and perfecting them. Your tools will dictate your speed. For instance, are you working with a metal lathe or just a tenon cut...

August goal... 15 stems in 31 days

So I decided that I’m going to focus on stems in the month of August... my plan is to do 15 stems in 31 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200730/abf417f419d63c05a56f5b4d187583d3.jpg days. My hope is to improve my skills by focusing intently on the stems and to develop my “style for cutting them. I ...
