Re: I drilled my mortise too deep

Hi, • You could use dremel with a round bit to smear down the draft-hole, as suggested above. • You could 'raise' the mortise floor back to the correct depth. Make a small plug (a small length of a briar dowel you custom make for this). Cut the correct depth -the balance between the tenon and the cu...

Hi,

Cool.

Nice exposure.
What was that shot on? What was the exposure time, 4 seconds, 7 seconds?

Re: LA fires

Hi,

I'm in West Los Angeles.

Close enough to see towers of smoke to the east, but not really near the fires or threatened in any way this time.

Re: How BAD does it have to be?

Hi, "Not sell, but a classic sandblast candidate"? Meaning you would blast it and keep it? After sandblasting I imagine it would look fine. Do you have concerns regarding the flaws? I know I need to get a sandblasting rig. I can't sandblast 3 or 4 pipes a year at Chicago. That's pathetic, ...

How BAD does it have to be?

Hi, I've been working on a few pieces lately and one is turning out nice. However it has shown several flaws which are bigger than the typical pin-point black dot. :filth-n-foul: http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w228/Souljer_album/PokerFlaws2009web.jpg So my question is how bad do flaws have to ge...

Re: okay, so you drilled it poorly, whats the next step?

the subject almost fully explains the question, if the smokehole and the mortise align, but the smoke hole enters the chamber not centered but still the at the bottom, what will you do? do you throw the block away or do you make a pipe of it? the only real issue in these, according to me is that th...

Umm . . . can we stop pretending that pipes are erotic objects. Let's face it, "blackboot," you're never going to do anything that revolutionizes pipes or pipemaking. The existence of pipes covered in leather is an unfortunate reality and there is nothing to recommend them. If you find th...

Hi,

Funny this came up,
I'm working on a version of this right now. A real pipe I mean, not illustration artwork. Great images though! :)

I guess it's not as original as I thought it was going to be.

Hi, If you are not sure if the slot is for cosmetics or not, you should think from the point of view of the question: What's the benefit of opening up the end of the mouthpiece? You could answer your own question by simply drawing a breath through the stem that still has some of the 1/16 inch sized ...

Re: Five questions about mortises and tenons

Hi, If you've never ever made a pipe before, I agree with your studying up on it before you get started. However as has been pointed out, if you really want to learn, you have to get dirty and do it. Do not fear making mistakes. Instead enjoy them as you learn what happened and figure out how to do ...

Hi, That does seem like a promising piece. I would agree with Kurt that the existing stem is not the way to go. Shaping a larger bit to the shape of the shank is far better than reducing the shank to a small round bit. You want to save as much of the shank as possible to balance the large, wide bowl...

Hello, Ah, okay. A curved shank. Since the draft hole has to be straight, you'll end up with wood off-center top and bottom so that the shank is bent but the draft hole is of course straight. The easiest way to practice this is to start with a clear idea and shape in mind. Randomly deciding to make ...

Re: #0921

Hello, How do you define the word, "Stem"? Here it seems both the stem (as I understand it) and the shank are curving, although very little. If you feel this is a "bad and halfhearted" attempt, I can only agree with you. You know more than anyone what you were trying for, and if ...

Hi, Interesting. Not sure what you were going for or if you knew either. Sort of seems like there is an idea somewhere, but it's not quite there yet. Considering what pierredekat said about the tenon (which I agree with), in this case I would make the tenon out of aluminum or brass tubing, or rod th...

Okay. I'm not sure what you are "differing" about, but if you chose to inhale, it's your choice. What I also meant was that "raw" tobacco smoke is vastly different and better than ciggerette smoke. I equate smoking or "a smoke" with other luxury, chemical indulgences li...

Thanx guys, I appreciate your comments.

The pick axe almost took forever. Balancing all those lines was difficult. It's also a fairly big piece. About 7 inches across, if I remember correctly.

Quite a substantial handful. Now that it's done, I'm glad I did it.
