Re: Selling your first pipe
Thanks all, been cranking away at billiards and Canadians this week. I'll pick the one I am least disappointed with and throw it up in the Gallery for you all to critique. LatakiaLover, I'm trying to match a Savinelli billiard and a billiard my grandfather passed down by Bertram in Washington. Its a...

Re: Selling your first pipe
Great advice. Thank youluttrell31 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 3:27 pm If someone pays $45 for a pipe that looks and feels like a $75-100 pipe they won't be disappointed, but if they pay $100 for a pipe that looks and smokes like a $45 pipe you won't sell many more. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Submission for your Critique
Thanks Ocelot, never offended, even maybe when I should be. Im going to focus on the classics.......and maybe still mess around with an abstract shape every once in a while just to keep my creativity fed. I was definately trying to sprint before I could crawl on this one, its just so much damn fun. ...

Re: Submission for your Critique
The biggest thing to work on is making your lines throughout the entire composition more crisp and defined. Definately need to improve on my shaping skills, thanks for the feedback 🙏 I also realize this shape is the definition of trying to run before I can crawl. Im going to focus on some more basi...

Re: Submission for your Critique
Thank you Doc Stem shaping is still a great struggle for me, but I have a new belt/disc sanding combo arriving tomorrow and I expect that will help a great deal. I just compared this button and bite to a couple of professionally made pipes I own and youre spot on. The button is bulky and misshapen, ...

Submission for your Critique
Please be brutal, I learn more that way. My own critique of this pipe is the line between rustication/smooth is messy, The rustication itself trapped some Carnuaba im not sure you can see, but some spots are a little matte. The "shank" is a wee bit twisted, I tried to show a little of plat...

Re: Selling your first pipe
Thanks a lot Ocelot, thats the exact type of advice I was hoping for. Only issue I have to overcome is I live in the Northeast Kingdom, Vermont about 10 miles from the Canadian border. I am VERY far from any pipemakers I am aware of. I guess my best bet would be Montreal which is about an hour and a...

Thanks Doc!
A living would definately be a pipe dream.....Im so sorry I had to say that haha. If it were to pay for itself that would be absolutely fantastic, but years of commitment are obviously needed. No illusions here

Re: Selling your first pipe
Doc, yes they pass fluffy cleaners, I recently feel like I got that part somewhat down. Mortise matches tenon depth and fits snug without being too tight. I have experience on a lathe, the airway drilling has been giving me the least trouble thus far. My biggest problem is I'll nit pick a stummel th...

Re: Selling your first pipe
Absolutely will upload, there's only one or two so far ild even consider selling. The second one you mention I smoke frequently, and although looks very chubby, tapers down significantly toward the button, bad angle of photo. Comfortable for me, but I typically try to match the stem measurements of ...

Selling your first pipe
Hello all and thanks ahead of time to anyone who responds with advice. I've been making pipes for about a year (about 40 so far) and have not been able to allow myself to let one go yet. Ive had friends and family ask for pipes to which Ive responded that they just arent good enough yet.. I have hig...

Name: Thomas Stark Age: 30 Location: Vermont Years a pipe smoker: 2 seriously. I dabbled a few times a decade ago but never had the "aha" moment. How I got into pipemaking: I discovered the IGPC and was immediately drawn to the shapes and grain quality. I bought a pipe kit and went at it. ...
