Re: Using a drive center or live center to turn stummels?

I use a live center on the shank and rarely on the bowl. Wood lathe though.

Just got through reading Turgenev's 'A Sportsman's Notebook'. Would love to see the Russia he describes.

Great pipe too. So intricate.

Re: PITH 2020 Review

An update here. I got DocAitch’s pipe for this year’s PITH. It goes without saying that it is a beautiful pipe. However, the most striking aspect of his pipe is how well it smokes. With most of the pipes I’ve made you have to suck on them a little bit. I also have 8 or 10 average production pipes to...

Re: Going to try bamboo.

Just got my bamboo. Around each ring node there are little stem like projections which will need to be removed and smoothed down. Is there a process for doing this neatly? Maybe snap them off with needle nose pliers? Wire cutters?

Re: Going to try bamboo.

Got it. My pipe making journey has been a matter of trying this and trying that. I do it for fun. And I like trying different techniques. I now thread my delrin tenons into tapped stems. I tried it. It works and I think it is better than gluing alone. All of which is to say that if I can figure out ...

"Mechanical permanence in .001 seconds. "

I had to laugh at that one. In my hands I think that would read "mechanical mayhem in .001 seconds".

But, I understand what you are saying. Have you made a video on this?

Thanks Doc. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a misadventure but it will be fun giving it a try.

Going to try bamboo.

Ordered some bamboo today. Never worked with it before. I suspect I'm in for a whole lot of frustration. I do have a couple of questions: 1. How do you face the bamboo at the stummel-bamboo junction and the bamboo-stem junction? I'm assuming that you cannot put bamboo in a lathe chuck so I have no i...

Re: Slot Cutting

I have a couple of bits I use for this. I do not know where they came from. They are not side cutting bits. They look like normal bits. But they side cut extremely well. Before I found them in my large pile of (mostly trash) bits, I was considering buying some side cutting ones but these work so wel...

jpkulp, I've tried to PM you a couple of times but they don't seem to be going through. PMs seem to be working with other members though. Not sure what's up. Anyway, you drew my pipe. My condolences. ;-) Anyway, if you will PM me or send me some contact info I'll get it mailed out to you ASAP. George

Re: PITH 2020!

Agree with George. That is a tough pipe to make with adequate floor thickness. Have tried and failed several times. Seems like the Giegers have some sort of trick with their Bodog pipes, named after Nordh of course. Can’t remember what they do but I think it has to do with a cone shaped chamber and ...

Re: Airway Drilling Help

My drill press was an old one (80 years old) and I could never count on perfect alignment. It was always a crap shoot.

A wood lathe changed all that.

Re: Vacuum cleaners

It looks well made. However, unless it is specifically designed for dust collection the filter will clog up fairly fast depending on your level of dust production. Having said that, I use a basic plastic shop vac for dust collection while making pipes and just move the hose end to wherever I need it...

Love the "steam-punk" lamps. Very cool.

My dad used to make lamps of old wagon wheel hubs. I have a metal one and a traditional wooden one down at my cabin.

Really like the shape of the stummel. Agree about the stem, just needs to slim down. I think the hour-glass shape of the stem needs to be less angular and more of a gentle curve.

Re: The first two true Tomatoes.

I am working on getting 4mm behind the button. Typically hit 4.5 and then chicken out.

As a clincher I find 4.5mm perfectly comfortable for me. I only have one production pipe that is 4mm. I cracked it clinching.

Re: 2nd Pipe

Agree with all of the above. It appears that the draft hole is off center. This could affect air flow.

But, from one beginner to another that is a heck of a second pipe. Good work and keep it up.
