Thanks. That's what I figured about the defects I just was not sure about the grain.

Re: Dumb Questions About Plateaus
Looking at the VF site there is ungraded Grecian (Makis) briar large plateaus ($15) for less half the price of a Mimmo large grade 2 plateaus ($45). I understand that if the Grecian is ungraded there will be a higher chance of defects. Are there other differences I should know about?

Working with an established pipe maker.
Looking over countless pipe websites one of the themes I see among artisan pipe makers is that many of them worked with or were taught by or were coached/mentored by established/well know pipe makers. It does not seem like many of these were actual apprenticeships but details are often lacking. The ...

Re: Shank-to-horn ring junction.
To clarify, it was said above that simply epoxying a horn shank extension would probably be too fragile. Is the same true for a wood-to-wood join without a tenon? I have some of the wood epoxy LL recommends in one of his videos (T-88). I have done this once with a small locust ring on the shank of a...

Re: Dublin chamber shape.
You are correct, I do not have a lathe. I am slowly getting my workflow down with just a drill press (which is nearly 100 years old). I would love to have a lathe but that isn't in the cards especially since this is just a hobby right now. But I watch videos of the workflow on a lathe and just drool...

Re: Dublin chamber shape.
Thanks guys. I have a Forstner and a spade (from Vermont Freehand). I normally use the Forstner first and then finish with the spade to make the bottom of the bowl round. But that technically does not give perfectly constant wall thickness for a tapering bowl like a Dublin. However, on the one I'm c...

Dublin chamber shape.
My son-in-law wants me to make him a straight Dublin. He is not a pipe aficionado, he just likes the shape. His expectations are in line with my inexperience. The question I have is in regard to the shape of the chamber. I read a description of the classic Dublin shape that said, as I understand it,...

Re: First Freehand
I'm finding that despite the great amount of information available here, there seems to be a certain amount of Yoda-to-Skywalker or Master Po-to-Grasshopper attitude towards new members and pipe makers that otherwise makes its utility to new pipe makers no more than that of a static document. It is ...

LatakiaLover, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I understand that he and all beginners can and should find and take to heart all the info that is on this site. But Doc said: "There is balance, symmetry, trueness of line and surface and an economy of materials that most beginning fre...

Rings for military mount.
Is there a supply source for silver or nickel rings for a military style stem mount? I have seen the rings available at Vermont Freehand but these are generally just a straight walled tube as far as I can tell. What I'm talking about curves inward towards the stem end which has a smaller diameter ho...

Re: Dumb Questions About Plateaus
Thanks guys. I get it. I made a couple of pipes of black locust and used what amounted to a plateau cut with the linear grain following the lines of the pipe. So far with briar I am more partial to the birds eye pattern on the sides and horizontal lines across the front but plan on experimenting wit...

Re: Tapered drill bits
Once you get a system down, making a stem from scratch is as easy and quick as using a premold stem. Once you get into the finer details, starting with a premold or a rough shaped stem from rod stock takes pretty much the same amount of time. At least in my experience. I may give it a try. I've rea...

Re: Tapered drill bits
It does seem that the churchwardens attract the nostalgic/Lord of the Rings crowd rather than the serious pipe smoker and it does seem that they get dismissed as flights of fancy as Kurt mentioned. A churchwarden was the first pipe I made, using the completely pre-made stem from China that I linked ...

Dumb Questions About Plateaus
So far I've been ordering ebauchons to make my pipes. I see videos of people making pipes from plateaus and it seems like those are all free hand style pipes with the rough surface intact on top of the stummel and often the shank end as well. I'm planning on trying my hand at that too. So the dumb q...

Re: Why so little activity here?
Along the way they realized that making them to a high standard was more important than feeling good about doing something poorly, that aspiring carvers who wanted to be lied to already had plenty of platforms that would provide that sort of "feedback" (FB, Instagram, etc), and that keepi...

Welcome from another new member. It seems like The Lord of the Rings has generated a lot of interest in pipes and pipe smoking.
Tons of good info here from guys who are experts and professional pipe makers.

As a new member and new hobbyist pipe maker I can tell you guys that this forum is a bit intimidating. This is not a criticism, just an observation. I'm learning my way around. I'm getting tons of great information reading old threads and via direct responses from helpful regular members. And I keep...

Check out this stem: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078LVP27G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 No it is not a high end stem but it is much better than most of the other low end Chinese junk. No you wouldn't use this stem for a paying client's pipe. But it is nice enough to ma...

Re: Defects in the briar.
Just finished a pipe from the block I mentioned above. No pits. No cracks. No inclusions. Grain is beautiful. Cost twice as much as my first few blocks but well worth it. Will continue to buy from this seller.
