Re: PITH 2020!

PITH Entry - Bulldesian. I loved this challenge. Thanks for putting it together, Premal. https://photos.smugmug.com/Client-stuff/Pipes/i-bVwBg6d/0/1c276cfe/XL/IMG_3856-XL.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Client-stuff/Pipes/i-fBwtkqd/0/0412bf38/XL/IMG_3859-XL.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Client-stuff...

Re: Blowfish

This is amazing. I love how the lines give it a feeling of being in motion.

wdteipen wrote: Wed Apr 08, 2020 10:06 am Look at your taper from shank to stem in the top down view. You did a nice job following the taper of the shank into your stem there then started your flare. Think of that concept when tapering the top and bottom of the stem.
That's helpful. thanks!

Re: canted Dublin

Actually I just checked again after looking at the image. It's only the bottom line that continues into the stem, the top line breaks at the stem/shank junction as it is.

I kind of love and kind of hate this hobby.

Re: canted Dublin

Thanks gents! I appreciate you taking the time to post feedback. With the material on the stem that needs to be removed, I was concerned with the bottom/top line of the pipe continuing its taper, but I was starting to run out of material in the shank to do that. As it is, the straight line continues...

canted Dublin

I'm enjoying making some more classic shapes on a lathe. This is my second canted Dublin, but my first with a handmade stem (stem needs a bit of finish work). Critique is welcome. I'm trying to learn. https://photos.smugmug.com/Client-stuff/Pipes/i-5z4cSTF/0/ad214feb/X2/IMG_6661-X2.jpg https://photo...

Yeah, I don't think it's a hard and fast rule...bulldog is sure easier to spell. I had to look up rhodesian the first few times.

Re: feedback on bent bulldog

...The only other thing of note for me is a question; I always thought the Bulldog shape had a Diamond shank, whereas yours is more square. Is this something that is relative to the carver or is the classic bulldog supposed to be diamond oriented? I thought so as well, but Tyler Beard made this com...

Re: PITH 2020!

I drilled a couple of holes in the VF jaws with my drill press and use a set nail to line up. It's definitely not as precise as the rawkrafted one though. When aligning, I use the center grove on the VF jaws as well as the live center to set up. When I'm realigning (I try to avoid this like the plag...

feedback on bent bulldog

I originally made this bulldog with an acrylic mold stem, but when I drilled it for the delrin tenon, it got internal cracks on the top and bottom that I didn't discover until I was done shaping it. I decided that enough was enough and bought some rod stock to start making my own stems. This is the ...

Hello from the Northwest burbs of Chicago

Hey everyone, Jason Patrick here. I've been a pipe smoker for the past 15 years or so. I got into pipe making earlier this year. I started with some wood in my garage to get the feel, and then got the bug. Bought a drill press, a belt sander and band saw and got a bunch of briar and stems at the Chi...
