Re: German ebonite producers

Mottled is the 8-swirled. (Left in picture) Marbled is the one swirled. (Right in picture) Mottled gives a more patchy pattern and marbled more smooth transitions as seen on the outside of the rods. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201029/ef74887324f61fb890f8e94c7b413ec0.jpg Skickat från min iPhon...

Re: German ebonite producers

I agree with Tyler here. I have used a variety of SEMs ebonite and never encountered something like this. That have to be a batch with some manufacturing error. Contact SEM. In my interactions with them they have been very good in their customer service and I am sure they will help you. Skickat från...

I've been wood turning for about a year now and got into that because I was to cheap to buy expensive fishing lures. So I decided to spend thousands on expensive machines to make lures and save a few bucks. . Welcome Jay! You will do fine as you show one of the most important aspects as an inspirer...

Re: First one

Thats a very good job for a first billiard. Well done! I feel like the upper part of the bowl walls could be tapered a tad more and have a clearer belly. But it is still pretty close as it is. The taper in the shank seems to be uneven, also by very little but it hard to tell from a picture. Looking ...

Re: Pre mold stem question

Two pieces of some hardwood with the same triangular notches that George has in his vice will work fine. Just get the notches squared up relative to the upper part of the jig. Clamp it in your vice, face the stem with a forstner bit and then drill for the tenon without moving anything between operat...

Re: I failed at making a pipe

Thats a good try on a third pipe, so dont be discouraged! Also you point out obvious flaws yourself so you know what to correct. I feel that your bowl should be a bit taller and the bowl profile should be a bit more tapered in on the upper third. Hard to tell from the picture but do you have the wid...

Re: The size of the briar blocks from Catalonia.

I have just ordered and received briar from ”Old Jaume Hom”. I bought ”normal extra” and the size and grain is what you would expect at that price range. They were nice blocks with different shapes, even a couple of half moons. The people behind the buisiness was very easy to deal with and shipped t...

It is always a joy to watch your videos George. Even if I dont do repairs I learn a new trick or two every time that can be used in pipemaking or other tinkering in the workshop. Thank you for making them and for sharing your knowledge!

Re: latakia tobacco brands

Try Mac Barens ”Latakia flake”. Their ”Vintage syrian” was a brilliant latakia blend but is discontinued. Have not tried the replacement ”Vintage latakia” but the HH-series are usually high quality. If you would like to venture outside latakia territory but like full flavor smokes you should try Mac...

Re: Carbon fiber

One thing to have in mind working with it is that i dulls tools fast. For cutting I use abrasive discs on a dremel. The dust isnt too healthy to breath either, so a good mask is essential.

Re: Carbon fiber

Im doing an experiment right now with carbonfiber tube as shank. My plan is using a short ebonite mouthpiece at the mouth end and epoxi the shank in the stummel. I belive Eltang uses carbonfiber in his Basic-pipes

Re: Pipe #3 – 1st Billiard

That looks very good for being a first billiard! As I see it a more rounded bottom of the bowl (think about a golf ball as the bottom part) and a bit more inclination of the upper parts of the bowl are improvements you can work into your next billiard. Keep up the good work! Skickat från min iPhone ...

You can make one much like it from a phillips screwdriver. Use a file to create the four points. It’s a charm when working the bowl-shank area.

Re: Buttons?

Thank you for the pipe history lesson @LatakiaLover ! Could you say that the more ”fine art” school of handmade pipes started in the same era when pipes went from an everyday tobacco delivery device towards something else, more like cigars? Feels like the 80s - 90s was when pipes started to disappea...

Re: Buttons?

Thank you both, I’ll go on with the style I have copied so far then. Interesting about english pipemakers, so they considered the stems of less importance? Are there any more local traditions in pipemaking/stems like that? I have seen pipes in 70’s freehand school, I guess danish, that have a lot of...
