I salute your ingenuity, George... but this seems like more of a pain than sandpaper, no?

Re: Residual moisture in briar (morta etc.)

You never can be sure how long a block has sat and dried. I just assume it's still too wet to work when I receive it and put it in a big plastic bag to let it slow dry for 6 months minimum.

Re: Lathe axis concentricity problem

I agree with Doc. If you look at the outer lines of your shank, you can see the bisecting line of your draught hole is too far to the right. Optical illusions abound in pipe making, in my experience.

Re: Shankless pipe?

Briar, morta and olive are the standard. Hardwoods will burn out with repeated use. Yes, Oak is an A1 carcinogen and bad for smoking pipes.

Re: Biliiard.. is it?

Looks really nice. The bowl looks canted forward a little too much. I personally don't like the slope from bite zone to button. A small slope looks ok, but I prefer a crisper transition. The whole pipe could do with a lot more sanding/polishing. All in all, you're on your way to making some really n...

Re: Anyone tried block microcrystalline wax on a buff?

I used it this weekend and can confirm the same results that George has gotten. It's kinda sticky shit, so I was careful when applying it to the first wheel so as not to gum the wheel up or burn it. But the sheen it provides is great. Thanks George!

If you don't have a compressor, canned air (keyboard cleaner) or a good wipe down with some alcohol will work just fine.

Also, the first bit of tooling I would recommend is a quick change tool post. Littlemachineshop.com is the place!

Re: Shop Fox m1049 9x19

When I got mine, the instructions recommended running each speed in forward and reverse for 10 minutes. Also, be sure to keep it well oiled. Just read the instructions and you should be good to go. Congrats on your new machine!
