Re: prince 9/2/18
From the profile view the shank taper is okay. It's from the top view that the shanks too straight. It would be more noticeable if your bowl/shank junction was tighter. Hope that made sense. The bowl height really is subjective. Most of the time my princes are 1.5" tall and 1.75" wide. Th...

Re: prince 9/2/18
Your bowl/shank transitions need to be a bit tighter (smaller radius). The bowl could be a touch shorter to my eye. Stem/stummel ratio look good. Bowl symmetry looks good. The stem bend looks maybe, maybe, just a touch overbent. From the top view: the flare of the stem is off. This is super duper t...

Re: shank extension
I think you should usually use at least 2 knuckles whenever possible. When I do bamboo, it starts with bamboo selection, not parting off a broken shank. If a shank is broken, I toss it aside and move on, because getting it to look right takes a lot longer than starting over and my shop time is more...

Re: shank extension
Dunhill turned to bamboo when there was a briar shortage after WWII for the same reason --- bowl flaws can often be blasted, but shank flaws are often fatal. The most common error when extending a shank with bamboo is choosing a piece that's too large in diameter. The "rule" among experie...

So I have a slight dilemma, I had to shorten the shank due to a flaw. Gimme some ideas as to what you would do. I have a mock up of what I was thinking using a reverse tenon, thoughts? For reference it would be approx 3" from front of bowl to the end of the ring as it is pictured. https://www.d...

Thanks Jeremiahsandahlpipe wrote:The radius on the bowl/shank transition doesn't match from the right to the left side of the shank. Also, I think there's too much of a "chin" on the bowl. I feel like the stem could probably be a half inch longer for a proper prince as well.

Re: cherrywood 8/19
Thanks George, I assume you're talking about the bottom side of the shank. I debated on pulling it up a little more, but was thinking a bit about that Becker you just repaired and decided to leave it a lil more beefy there.

I had the pleasure of meeting The Legend in person at the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club meeting this month and I have to say, what a remarkably friendly and straight forward person he is, rather refreshing in this day and age. Maybe I just haven't been hanging in the right circles, as everyone I met...

Had to move on from the author shape for awhile :D . Basic shaping is done, tweaks to come. Anybody see anything way off? This will be on the shorter side at 4.5" approx. https://www.dropbox.com/s/nr7fh60u03dxrxc/20180819_194503.jpg?dl=1 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ubight1dylcvi4/20180819_194512...

Re: Prince 8/04/18
The only thing I would change is the taper on the sides of the stem. I think a fishtail on a prince should be a fishtail only in the last about 1/3 of the stem and the rest of the stem should match the sides of the shank. Thanks Jeremiah, will do on next one. I like the material fine...it's funky. ...

Thanks John, I had that chunk of acrylic rod and wasn't sure what it would look like machined and polished, I think I like it, probably not to everyone's taste though.

Thanks George and Wayne. Wayne what should I be shooting for roughly on the ring width? Should the top ring be on the downward slope and the lower ring at the bottom edge of the widest part of bowl then? Here it is completed. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ytq3p0zqbzike6w/20180810_193340.jpg?dl=1 https:/...

Interested in critique on the stummel shaping and what if anything you would change. First time on this shape and there are a couple things I would change in my process of doing the cap and airway/mortise drilling that I have noted for the next try. There are some bubble inclusions in the ebonite so...
