Thank you Sig! I trimmed up that button and my son is happily puffing away!

Re: Volcano

Great stuff Jeremiah. The slot gave me fits. I was able to widen the funnel, but it does look rough. I'll give it a thorough filing and sanding.

One freaking pit

I'm finishing up a volcano and there is one pit on the top of the shank. I'm gifting this pipe but I want it to be as perfect as I can make it anyway. I'd like your opinion as to whether I leave it as is in all its natural pitted glory, or rusticate the last bit of the shank to cover it up? Apprecia...

I like to carve

My first pipe was a Dr. Grabow freehand. I wanted a pipe rest for it. I found a neat ceramic figure of a dude holding a cello and the cello was hollowed out for the pipe to rest in. I got the idea that it'd be really cool to hand carve a dude sitting on the floor holding an old wooden bucket and the...

Re: Poker for critique

Thanks for your input. I've got a new stem in process on my bench, so that's great advice.

I saw in the archives a thread on how to face stem parts before drilling.

Poker for critique

Pipe is for a friend. He wanted a short stem on it and heavy rustication. Hand cut stem. I appreciate any critique or advice. Thank you. It's a learning experience and I'm just getting started. Nothing made me more nauseous than hoping that line was a sandpaper scratch and not the draft hole emerging to the light of day.

Re: Dagnabbit

I did exactly the same thing on my first hand cut. LL uses tape or a 1/16 th plastic rod inserted in the airway. I now insert a 1/16" steel rod when I check the side. Kurt Huhn did a photo essay in the stickies above, check it out.http://www.pipemakersforum.com/photo_essays/handcut_stems/ Also...

Thanks Wayne. How much shorter? Struggling a bit with proportions.
