Weighing in again, because I can see already I'm probably in the minority. Little to no task-jumping for me. Once I start it's a purely tunnel vision sort of "zone" thing that I stay in until its finished. Not because I want to, necessarily, but because I must. I skip meals and lose track ...

I don't make whole pipes, but the level of attention required is the same for repair work (and the number of tools employed is probably greater), so I'm qualified to take a swing at this, I think: Is working all day at such a thing mentally possible? Using my hands for fine work is the most natural-...

...LL, you are doing repairs right? Using the Taig for repairs would indeed be an inefficient tool. I hear ya, Tyler! Somehow this thread morphed from me looking for a "spacer & liner maker" into something I want to make bits with. Not so. For repair work, not even a full size l...

Unusual (and nice) finish. You creative thing, you. Too bad the only reasonable option for long stems anymore is that standard molded one, because the ivory widget gives the pipe a Nobleman-y sort of vibe. Cool that your customer took the set. That will happen more often than not---make two w/a slig...

It's hard to imagine Eltang letting that one get away, for sure. You can always rusticate if it doesn't work (though it would have to be dark, I imagine.)

Shape / style idea (from photo)

Only a Cutty, but the line and flow is excellent, and the slightly stretched overall length plus the unusual stem/shank treatment makes it memorable, imo. Dead classic, yet fresh. Just tossing it out there for you maker-dudes to Grok. http://img4.shareavenue.com/thumbnails/d/a/3/9/da395da2f454e22da3...

Jack, I suspect that you are not a pipemaker at all. You are a machinery junkie. Don'y laugh. A passion for fine machinery runs deep. But to USE it, SOME application must be chosen. A friend of mine became a large diesel engine specialist not because he enjoys flying to mines in the Australian outb...

Damn, I wish I had bookmarked the site, but somebody out there is doing some really awesome partial rustications. This wouldn't be it---it's a Castello factory pipe---but your comments brought some clever stuff to mind. I love the "cracked egg" look happening here: (The bowl shape sure is...

Running on, nuthin'! :D That was truly comprehensive. Thanks VERY much! It sounds like that machine---where pipes are concerned, anyway---is better suited for hobbiests for whom time doesn't matter much, where the pleasure is in the doing. I have to pay attention to bottlenecks and be fairly efficie...

Jack,

Meaning, make what you need to between the chuck and headstock---like a table leg, or whatever---and then cut off the unused material at each end?

Question about the Taig mini-lathe

I started thinking about getting one to keep around for the odd spacer, sleeve, or whatever, and in researching them here on the KurtBoard see that some guys use them for stems. How? The spindle bore is a third of an inch. Whether rod stock or molded, nothing is gonna fit. Signed, Confused in North ...

Steve,

Does the bit on the bottom one fit flush against the end of the shank, or is it recessed?

OK. Received a box of fresh wheelage today from McMaster-Carr, and decided to go for it. Used 20 grit. It is literally gravel. Huge spaces between the chunks, and they are sharp. Half the wheels I mounted were round out of the box, the other half not. #1 -- Medium pressure, slowish side-to-side moti...

This is truly weirding me out. I do regular sweeps w/ Google and etc. to capture pipe & tobacco news; have whole pages of links to forums, newsletters, blogs, show schedules, and so forth. Hell, even some foreign language sites I can't read, for the pics. Not to mention stacks of books and magaz...

If the joint had still been flush, I suspect that I would have had little difficulty buffing out the stem and maintaining the integrity of the blast. In past restorations this has not proven a problem. A touch or two of the buffing wheel to a blasted shank hasn't been problematic in the past. How w...

Jeff, Got it. Before, it seemed like you were only moving the problem, not eliminating it. And I couldn't think how to get out of the box. If the stem/shank join was already a bit blurry, there was no issue in the first place, though. Duh. Wanting to do it the way you did "just because" ma...
