First, I would try to make the chamfer not too deep. Then I would sand it smooth. Next I would work on the button with the needle file. I'll bet that these small changes/improvements will help a lot. Smoke it for a while & see if it performs better. Half the fun of these smoking tools, to me, is...

OK....now to ask the rookie question....Why would you want a fake bamboo stem? Bamboo is used for its functionality as well as for its beauty. Why fake it? It's not hard to get. Maybe to show off your artistic ability as a pipe maker?
