Re: Gloredo Pipe Cleaners
Searched around for the Vauen and found the white and blue ones but they're the bristle kind. I couldn't find the white ones anywhere online in the states. Seems Vauens are a lot more expensive than the standard. ... Found them on smoker's haven: http://www.smokershaven.com/browseproducts/Vauen-Pip...

Re: Gloredo Pipe Cleaners
Me too! I bought a bunch about 3 years ago. I have 8 left. Isn't there a German brand that's really high quality. They're striped as I recall. White and blue maybe? Anyone know which brand that us? Vauen. Also available in white. For me, the one & only brand, I don't use other pipe cleaners tha...

Re: Grubs in my briar
Last year, I had a block in which the very same dust pits showed up, just more of that. I poked out the dust, and this is what turned out: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-wCWy1K_tous/VKb-_SbkzwI/AAAAAAAAD1g/e5zlNYiuyGM/s640/CAM00099.jpg In one of the holes I found dryed remainders of the critter,...

Re: D'Huber had a pipe maker uncle?
Hi David, ...Apparently they also blend tobacco. I'm gonna have to try some. http://www.pfeifen-huber.de/tabak/huber-tabakmischungen.html?sCoreId=62bb0f640555fd8ab8351d5df244e04f I absolutely recommend to do so, some of their blends are pretty great, especially the Balkan and the English Perique. Hi Daniel,
I use "Pattex Kraft-Mix extrem fest" : http://www.pattex.de/do-it-yourself-mit ... -fest.html
Quite similar to that Uhu schnellfest stuff, I guess ... works for me.

Re: Segmented pipes
German pipe company, Vauen of Nuremberg, been making such pipes for some years now: http://www.vauen.de/de/pfeifen/wood.aspx
They're using briar inserts. Guess if it didn't work, they'd quit making these in the meantime ...

Re: Cheap BeltSander
Back in 2008, I started with a belt sander of that very type. You're gonna find out that its possibilities are very limited. I then switched to a sander of this kind: http://www3.telus.net/BrentBeach/Sharpen/beltsander00.jpg ... and kept working with it up to now. Not feeling an urge to switch to a ...

Re: denatured Alcohol
Nope - denatured alcohol contains chemicals to make it undrinkable, it's only to be used as solvent, cleaner etc. Usually smells badly ... Everclear contains nothing but alcohol & water, and can be used for beverages. There's nothing wrong about using denatured alcohol for mixing stains, for exa...

Re: Briar grading
Ok, I'll give it a try. "R" and "M" stand for "Releve" and "Marseillaise", these indicate standard sizes of briar blocks. "extra" and "extra-extra" indicate standard qualities - "extra" is regular stuff, "extra-extra" is...

And for Pete's sake don't ever ship a thing internationally other than registered and insured, everything else can, and will, get lost.

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
Perhaps you should focus on used lathes ... if you're lucky, you can find something like a Jet 9 x 20 on Craigslist, for little more than what you'd have to spend on that "mini" thingie. That'd be a machine that plenty of guys 'round here are happy with.

Re: Anyone heard of Sherline Metal Lathes
Oh, yes. And a big "arrggghhh" it is ...Sea Jay wrote:Jens, thanks. Why can I hear my wallet going arrggghhh all of a sudden?
But it's better to wait and save money a little longer than spending on a lathe that does'nt do the trick.
You'd want a bigger one later on anyway ...
