Re: Does this bend look right?

Well it's already got a stain on it, but a very light one I'm just gonna leave it like this to make the grain pop and keep it a nice contrast from the Cumberland

Does this bend look right?

This is 14. It isn't finished yet I was just seeing what yall thought about the bend I've got on this stem. I'll post more pics when it's finished http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/28/16ad3b53624c9698618f333a35877869.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/28/c62f1fda15efd63ecbacef069e3aa944.jpg...

Re: Bowl coating pealing everytime

Is there a reason sodium silicate is used? Is it just a more protective coating than other substances used as adhesives in bowl coatings

Re: Ok #13 a redo of the last one

Ok I see what you're saying just a little less if a bend I guess. I had the bend tighter in this one because I like to try and keep the grain on the shank perpendicular to the curve of the shank. I guess I need to visualize the end product better while I'm drawing according to the grain Sent from my...

Re: Ok #13 a redo of the last one

The buyer specified the green Cumberland. I thought the same thing but I actually like it better that the red for some reason, but that maybe because it's just my latest pipe. I always tend to like my latest one the most

Re: Ok #13 a redo of the last one

Alright thanks a lot sandhal. 1. I think it may have just not been pushed in all of the way because these were two turned surfaces and actually fit together really well, I'll have to remember to check that before pictures next time. 2. I see what you mean about the saddle it's kinda stuck in limbo t...

Ok #13 a redo of the last one

So I got a commission to do a pipe very similar to my last one except with green Cumberland this time, this gave me a chance to try and use the advice I got from you guys to improve. What do you think? http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/17/6c2bf10f693b28441d5f1e802bdebda2.jpg http://images.tapatal...

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

Thanks a lot for the critique yeti I appreciate it I definitely see what you are talking about this was my first attempt at a shank extension, besides bamboo, which doesn't really need shaping after attaching. I think I was afraid to take of too much material from the accent wood. I'll keep all of t...

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

Oh ok I see. Yeah the drop off that I have isn't 90 degrees and it is definitely closer to 90 in the tsuge pipe I think I gotcha now. I was focusing more on where the blade meets the saddle as opposed to where the saddle begins, but I guess that initial 90 degree drop will affect both Sent from my i...

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

I have been told to try and keep a concave taper throughout the stem to give it a flowing look and not to just go from saddle to a straight taper. I would think that making the blade and saddle visibly distinct would interrupt the curve, but having a saddle that transitions into the blade with a con...

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

I have been studying saddle bits the last couple of days and have found plenty of examples of what you are talking about with regards of making the saddle more deliberate. I have also found some that are less deliberate like the one in the picture. I'm not trying to say what I did is the right way o...

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

Oh ok so it needs to be thinner earlier on in the stem? I guess for a stem like this it needs to just drop and go as this as you can and still have a taper

Re: Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

I think those marks in front of the button are from scraping the compound out of that groove with my fingernail and a paper towel I am hoping that re waxing it will fix that because the marks weren't there until after I scraped it out so I'm hoping it's just a smudged wax layer. The unevenness of th...

Number 12 a commission heading to Texas

Here is number 12 this is a commission that I did for a guy in Texas. It's got a little more going on than I usually do with the spalted maple and Cumberland together but I like the way it turned out. What do yall think? http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/07/4a047c09106b6fa2fffa0bdc17c6ec66.jpg ht...

Does this shape work?

Alright thanks. I definitely think I need to work on the shape of the shank. I was thinking about mirroring the bowl shape but then I would have to get rid of the second line on the bottom which I really like

Does this shape work?

Alright so I cut into this piece of briar and found a huge flaw where I was planning to have the shank, so I had to either cut it off or curve it around the flaw so I decided to try an asymmetric shape and curved the shank. This is my first attempt at asymmetry and my 12th pipe so I may be getting a ...
