Re: Can this be fixed?
Thanks for the tips. I have made progress on this one. I was doing fairly well with the shaping after the epoxy cured. The lips were roughly shaped and I was working on the stem. I even taped it to avoid scratching the part that I didn't work on. OOPS, I cut a groove next to the tape, with the jewel...

Re: X,Y and Z adjustable custom drill press clamp
I see, thanks for the explanation. An idea, I have used and seen used stuff called 'blue tac' for machining stuff. It is a sticky blob that can be formed to shape and used to hold something for other work. It MAY work for this. There is also some heat forming plastic that will allow something to be ...

Re: Chuck Question
It would be a pretty sad drill press that had too much slop in the spindle to drill a hole in wood.

Re: X,Y and Z adjustable custom drill press clamp
That is quite a contraption.
Yes, I know that this is an old thread, but, why not use a normal chuck mounted on the drill press?
Just curious, trying to learn. Seems that the time to drill the bowl and mortise is before shaping, while the block is chunky.

Turning a stummel from grained wood, like oak.
I am a newbie at this process. I am a retired old coot, not looking for commercial help, but needing help with a new hobby. Here goes. I have my lathe ready to attempt to make a turned stummel. The band saw still needs to be set on it's base so I can cut the rough blank. I will be working with grain...

Re: Sharpening drill bits
I learned long ago to sharpen bits by hand. Practice, like anything we do, makes perfect. Also, a Drill Doctor bit sharpener Does work. A bit spendy, but it works. I am comfortable sharpening bits down to 1/8" or so by hand. Just practice.

Can this be fixed?
I got this pretty little Mansion House pipe in a bunch of estate pipes. I really like the shape and it is in good condition overall, but the stem is a mess at the button. The pipe... https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4084/35471559152_b55442a1dd_z_d.jpg The stem from the bottom... not so bad. https://fa...

Re: Stuck stem and other questions
Thank you! I am learning slowly. One thing I have learned is that I will have to sneak the pipe into a freezer. LOL
Now I see that the oddball (meerschaum) pipe has a stuck stem too. Not sure how to proceed with that one.

Stuck stem and other questions
I got this collection of estate pipes from ebay, just came in today. I think I did OK. Nine pipes and a nice lazy susan rack with humidor for 50 bucks. So, what is that oddball in the upper left, top row? I can't wait to clean up the next one, the Soren freestyle sitter. It is in very nice shape, ju...
