Re: PITH 2017!!!!!!!
Guys, I'm going to bow out. I think I was probably overly ambitious at this stage. Having problems and time constraints completing the replacement stem for my piece...and it doesn't really fit the PITH criteria. I've learned so much in my several attempts at a classic oval shank. I'm grateful for th...

Re: Second completed Pipe. Blasted Billiard.
I generally cut my tobacco chambers undersized and enlarge them with sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. The dowel has a piece of lag bolt shank screwed into the end, and is then shaped on the lathe with the lag bolt shank chucked in. I then slit the dowel with a saw to hold the paper. 40 grit center...

Re: PITH 2017!!!!!!!
Well, after blowing through 5 blocks I'm close to finishing Pipe #3. This will be my PITH entry. It's not a traditional oval shank, but oval-ish (hope that's ok). For what it's worth, this is my first freehand shaped/drilled pipe. Completed pipes have been few and far between. Certainly learned a lo...

Re: Ball Saddle Stem
Thanks Latakia. I think it's just the way I'm holding the false stem. The tenon is smaller than the mortise. But I'll certainly double-check my alignment.LatakiaLover wrote:

Re: Ball Saddle Stem
One factor on the etch-a-sketch method is your lathe. If you have a 7x20, good luck. The tiny wheels make it really hard. The bigger the handwheels, the easier it is to etch-a-sketch. On my 12” it’s pretty easy to get close to what I want, then I just refine it with sand paper. Tyler, I have an Enc...

Re: Ball Saddle Stem
I'm better with hand tools. More instinctual. Working with two hands I'd like learning to play the guitar for me. I'm more linearly oriented. I appreciate the advice Premal and Jeremiah.

I'm looking to get some more files for shaping. I have some random ones, but looking for what would work best. Suggestions? Pics greatly appreciated too.

Re: PITH 2017!!!!!!!
I'm in if it's still open. I'll get an oval shank made asap. (I also still have one left from Chicago so...) Take your time and make one the best you can. This is a good exercise for the experienced to guide and the novice to learn while in the process of making. I'm not so sure of provid...
