Need 26mm Light Grey Ebonite!

I am in need of 26 mm or larger diameter light grey ebonite. Does anyone here have some they'd sell me? I have checked everywhere. My last option is ordering directly from SEM, but they will hit me with $57 shipping.

Re: Pictorial: How I Make A Pipe

Thanks guys. The comments further solidify I'm headed on the right path. I haven't posted anything for critique in a while simply for the fact that My skills aren't yet good enough that I can't honestly critique myself. When I start thinking my work is wonderful, I will need another set of eyes. As ...

Probably pretty novice. But here it is.

Shipping, stem in or out?

Do you ship your pipes assembled or separated? I am concerned with climate and atmosphere differences. I've received pipes with stems out and they dont fit flush when I assemble them, but the maker swears it was flush when it left them.

Thoughts?

Re: So now what

So let's say in theory you get a cease and desist letter. Do you get fined or does the fine come only if you don't cease and desist once notified. Cuz I hear all of you and it makes a ton of sense. I'm just not sure I can justify risking a 10k fine or whatever it may be because I want to make a pipe...

Re: So now what

I hope for all our sakes you are correct. I'll have to wait some and see. My anxiety disorder is telling me to hold off selling to the US market. Sometimes you have to listen to your gut feeling, even if it turns out to be wrong. I made 39 pipes my first year so some would say I'm still a turd maker...

Re: So now what

I must be just another turd maker then. But I'm not sure how the plate and flatware industry compares in relation to the tobacco industry as far as extent of regulation, so I can't speak to that. I just know what I've read about the new FDA tobacco deeming. People should be informed, as much as some...

Re: So now what

I don't know that the 10k fee is correct as I have yet to see an actual statement of costs in the FDA deeming regulations, but it does state that components and parts (which pipes now fall into) are being deemed after July 31st, 2016. So technically, to legally make pipes and sell them in the USA, y...

Re: Coloring Horn

That makes sense. Maybe I'll make a homemade vaccum jar to try this.

The only reason I'm even thinking about coloring it is to keep the theme of a set of 3 pipes.

Re: Coloring Horn

Well if I don't have anyone else chiming in with their own experimentation results, I'll put mine up when I get around to pulling it out of the dye. If it looks saturated, I'll hit it with the heat gun and see if I can get the color to come back out easily. I am most worried about longevity of the c...

Coloring Horn

Has anyone had any luck coloring horn? I notice there are dyed horn plates available in red and green. Not sure how it's done, but I dropped a small piece of horn into my leather dye to see if it will saturate. Not sure it will hold the color even if it does saturate, but thought it was worth asking.

Re: sanding off base coat

That is a good point. I'll keep that in mind as I get better and better at finish sanding. For now I will continue to stain to find all of the scratches until I cam confident in my ability to do it by "feel".

I tend to stain between grits so I can find all scratches, but maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Re: Ox horn dust

Thanks premal, so I have a a Laguna cyclone dust collector, and a powermatic 1200 air cleaner, but it sounds like I need to exhaust my Laguna to the outdoors. I have about a 5" hole in my basement wall right next to the collector I would use, any suggestions on how to collect the output of the ...

Glass Bead Media

Where do folks get their glass bead media? I'm looking for a 170 to 300 grit or so. A lot of sites just list as medium, fine, etc, and not in grit. Also, I'm finding that shipping for a 50 lb bag costs about as much as the bag itself.

Ox horn dust

I don't have dust collection at my lathe yet. How bad is ox horn dust? I want to turn down some for use as stem inlays but remember seeing a program where people were etching bone and they were all wearing masks. Something about the dust can make you really sick. Is the same true for horn? I have an...

I have a rad davis that I commissioned made with a Juma stem and absolutely love it. So that is where my interest in the material comes from. Al...
