Re: Bamboo Shank Extension Questions
Thanks for the specs Scottie. I ordered both sets of pin gauges. The cheapest cost wise that I could find were from HFS off of Amazon. Didn't get as good of a deal as everyone else, but got both sets for $140. Jeremiah, First I would like to say congratulations to you and your wife! And secondly, th...

Re: Bamboo Shank Extension Questions
If you are using 3/8" OD stainless go to Lowe's and get the Dewalt split point 3/8" bit to drill the mortise in the stem with. Scottie, Thank you so much for all of the advice. I greatly appreciate your willingness to share your technique. I feel a lot better about attempting this now, kn...

Bamboo Shank Extension Questions
I have wanted to try my hand at creating a pipe with a bamboo shank extension. I have some mini blocks that I have thought about shaping and adding bamboo shanks to. I would be attempting to do a reverse tenon for the stem. Also, Ill be attempting the entire process of facing the bamboo and shank of...

Re: Tapered mortise / stem replacement
Thanks for all of the advice so far. The pipe itself does not have any bands. I don't believe that it will be possible to re-drill it, and I would prefer not to do that, given that it is an older pipe and I really don't want to run the risk of breaking it. Ill try to upload a picture later this even...

Tapered mortise / stem replacement
Hello everyone. It has been a long time since I posted last, and I hope everyone is doing well! A co-worker of mine asked me to make a replacement stem for his father in-laws meerschaum pipe for Christmas. The pipe does not have the original stem with it, and has a tapered mortise. Is there any way ...

Re: PITH 2017!!!!!!!
Hey guys and gals, I am hoping to be able to get my pipe done in time. Do we have a specific date in mind for when we would like to do the exchange? I haven't had a lot of time in the shop lately, as over the last month I changed jobs, planned a wedding, and got married. All of these things have lim...

Re: Scratches in lathe bed ways
Thanks for your help here everyone. I have Jet Mini wood lathe. I haven't sanded the ways at all, nor would I ever consider doing that. I did however flip the tool rest over and sand the bottom of the rest with some 400 grit paper to see if it had a burr that i needed to sand off. That didn't seem t...

Scratches in lathe bed ways
I noticed this evening that I am getting some scratches on the ways of my wood lathe. It happens when I'm moving the tool rest slide around. I took it completely off, and sanded it lightly with some 400 grit sandpapers, but I'm still getting scratches. Hasn't happened before, and I've had the lathe ...

Bulk Sandpaper Recommendations
Do you guys have any recommendations for buying good quality sandpaper in bulk?
Sheets or rolls would be fine. I spend so much time going back and forth to the local hardware store to buy paper when I run out, I'd Like to find a reputable source to order quality paper from so that I don't have to.

Re: Workbench question for metal lathe
Thanks for all of the advice guys. As far as the amount of water that we get in the basement, It amounts to between 1/4-1/2 inch of water after a really bad rain storm. It typically happens once or twice per year, and usually only lasts a day. It doesn't cover the whole basement, but comes into the ...

Re: Workbench question for metal lathe
Be it a factory stand, an after-market stand/bench or DIY, the main thing is to make sure it is as level as you can make it in order to prevent twisting the bed. If you have water issues I would not have wood in direct contact with the floor. If you have a very old lathe there can be wear in the wa...

A steel base will always be better, get someone to weld up a simple but strong frame with a solid top, add levelling feet and you'll be ok.
I haven't purchased it yet, but it will weigh just under 500 lbs.

Workbench question for metal lathe
After doing a lot of research, and much help from you guys here on the forum, I have decided on a metal lathe to buy. Now the question is do I buy the stand or do I build myself a custom workbench sturdy enough to hold the lathe, and maximize the space in my shop. Understanding the complexity and im...
