Re: Volcano
That natural bottom is super sexy. Nicely done! just watch out for the button width as Sandahl said.

Re: Rusticated and Blasted Finishing
I got mine in a 3 pack with different "grits" and they can get pretty rough so try to use the lowest RPM that you can while still being effective. I tinnk I bought mine at ACE hardware.
You could also go at it with brass brush in your hand.

Jakub, I don't think that pipe was so bad you need to forget it happened. The first and third "versions" definitely have a visible style to them. I can tell you have something in mind and will eventually nail it. Keep trying to achieve it! The "standard" pipe look JMG drew up is ...

Re: 2nd attempt, be gentle!
some advice about the scratches: when you sand and file, try to work along the stem and not across it. I heard a pipe maker once explain that any marks crossing the stem (or anything that will be polished) will only deepen by the buffing process. Sand along the length and buff across or in a radius....

Re: Some pipes I made
Very interesting shapes! I haven't seen a rusticated stem before. That's neat, I want to try it. I know that olive wood retains it's olive scent after many years. Does the wood also retain an olive flavor?

Re: first attempt
Agnoeo, thanks for sharing! I think your pipe came out great for a first try! Using only rasps and files for shaping is long hard work. I used the same method for my firstpipe (and also displayed it on the same Mac-Baren Navy Flake tin!) http://pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1043...

That grain is insane! Looks great!
Re: Pipe #3
Thanks for the great tips! This was my first time bending the stem. Next time i'll do some grinding after the bend.

Re: Pipe #3
I wanted a thick curvy Whale-like shape. My original thought was to shape the outside like an acorn by keeping a protruding cap on the top but I seem to have left too much material on. I've seen many comments about keeping a well defined shank but I wanted it to blend right into the sides of the stu...
Pipe #3
I completed this piece while trying out some new tools and methods! This is my first piece using a sanding wheel and also using my lathe to polish and buff. This was also my first attempt with dye. I am very happy with the results!! I still used files and rasps for cleanup. The color isn't perfect i...

Wow, you're not kidding! Your pipes came out very smooth. What all tools did you use back then? They look really nice for a first and second.

Re: First Briar Kit
Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about the taper on the stem. Maybe I'll do the next one on my lathe.

First Briar Kit
Hi all. I just completed my first briar pipe - a kit bought from Vermont Freehand :-D I used only files, rasps, and sandpaper for shaping. I was going for a billiard shape but wanted to keep the base because it sat so well. Now the outside of the bowl is not tapered enough to look like a proper bill...

Re: First pipe
For making a bent stem, you make a straight stem and heat it evenly with the heat gun and bend by hand. Be careful not to get it too hot or bend it before it's warm enough. Too hot and the airway may collapse and not hot enough and you may break the stem. However, I recommend starting with a straig...

Thnkscfor the tip. I want to make a church warden so I thought the maple stem would offer good practice. Any tips on making a bent vulcanite stem? It does smoke without irritation but the flavor is off just a little. I didn't pretreat the bowl so that may be the reason. Either way this was not meant...

First pipe
Hi folks, this is my first pipe and really my first post. I've really enjoyed reading on this forum! The pipe I've made is all hand worked because I don't yet have the right teeth for my late, nor a drill chuck for the tail. The stumel of this pipe is oak and the stem is maple with a delrin tenon. I...
