Re: What lighters or styles do you prefer?
I love the brand names mentioned on here! I am a lighter fan, something causes me to obsess a little bit about cool mechanical devices that also happen to cause fire..

Re: G+ tonight
On Friday nights those of us who have nothing better to do go on the Google + chat service, it's like a multiple-person skype. It's usually good fun, if there's too many people it gets choppy. But it's the only way a lot of us get face-to-face between shows (or at all). This sounds like fun! I'll h...

Re: a mini metal lathe?
The first 10 or so pipes I made were made at a friends shop on pretty much that exact lathe. You can indeed make pipes on it, but you will be wanting a bigger lathe sooner rather than later. The swing above the ways is very limiting and the tool carrier is forever in the way. If you turn pipes in a...

Re: a mini metal lathe?
Thank you very much for the feedback and for humoring me! I have real shop space lined up (not just working out of the garden tub in the master bathroom!), and access to some basics; table saw, band saw (edited from ban saw to dispel concerns of idiocy), drill press, various hand tools etc. I am dre...

Re: a mini metal lathe?
There's a lot you can do, but also a lot you can't. My lathe isn't much bigger than that but I have various modifications that allow me to do more. I think you would likely find you want something bigger very quickly. TY for the reply! I just had a weird deja vu moment, I hope I didn't post this sa...

a mini metal lathe?
Do you think something like this would work for an entry level pipe maker to do some work above and beyond what a wood lathe can do? http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4171G7VV5WL.jpg I'm curious if anyone has tried to do the basics on a rig this size/price range. I found it here http://www.amazo...

Re: Some new pens
The first and the fourth are ebony; the middle two are acrylic; the one at the end, not sure, may be rose wood. And yes, there are many fountain pen kits. The Mont Blanc is an extremely well crafted pen and the materials used are impeccable. The basic models are very nice. The higher ones are just ...

Re: What lighters or styles do you prefer?
I use a bic lighter or matches in my shop, whatever is closer to me when I need to relight. When I sit down to smoke, I use a Xikar pipe lighter that I've had for 2 years. It works well and has survived several drops. One day, I'm going to get an Old Boy, but that may be a while. Do you use a candl...

What lighters or styles do you prefer?
Has there been a thread on this? I haven't found one yet.
I'm curious what type of lighter people on here prefer, any why behind it would be great too.
I'm curious to see any links or info on what people out there are using especially anything unique or unusual.

Re: Some new pens
Thanks for the feedback. Essentially you're correct. A copper tube is inserted into a blank which is turned, polished and then assembled with the metal components. However, there are no briar blanks in these pens. But, here are a pair I made during the summer, one of which was gifted to Tim West. N...

That's the first briar pen I've seen (I'm assuming that's a briar) and wow, awesome job they are amazing.ronps wrote:Took a short break from pipes and went back to the lathe on these.
Do you purchase kits with all of the metal bits ready to go and just pop on the wooden body when you have it prettied up?

What about pine? Is pine OK? Seems like the sap would provide a more "natural" bowl coating, and add an awesome flavor! Rad LOL! cured in turpentine of course so it can be a foul weather pipe All of my posts yesterday should have a 'cold and flu medicine' disclaimer. I am looking back ove...

Re: Keeping Warm in your Shop
Hmmm, you're almost into Canada and you didn't hear about the incident? Are you on the northern peninsula in a cave? Google up shooting in Ottawa and read all about it. Ah I had heard about the shooting at the memorial but not all of the details as of yet. As fallout over the shootings: " the ...
