You have an excellent eye for lines and the hands to follow!!

A very remarkable first pipe!

I encourage you to keep working with those blocks from Love and keep posting the results!

WBill, My advise is going to be contingent upon what your future plans are within pipemaking. You either aspire to make "higher" quality pipes than you are capable of now and you are hoping to sell these future pipe. Or, you aspire to make "higher" quality pipes than you are capa...

achduliebe,

That is an interesting list. Makes one think that the toxicity issue doesn't apply to pipes considering that Olive and Rosewood are both "popular" alternative materials after briar and meerschaum. They have rating of 3 and 4(out of 5?) respectively on potency.

Kurt,

I am having a bit of trouble seeing the details of your pipes.....could you post a larger picture to help me out? :P

Kidding aside, nice work there. Its nice to see the transformation from the first pics.

How was your first experience blasting?

Linseed oil, and nearly all plant oils, do "harden". This is another term, in the wood working industry, for "drying". Virgin linseed oil applied to wood will take about 2 years to dry on its own with good ventilation. There will be a residue left behind inside the wood. This res...

BDP, Sweet couple of pipes!! Too bad that you can't get a closer pic of the rustication. I am guessing that your camera does not have a "Macro" setting on it? If it does then try using that to get in really close. Another trick that sometimes works is to take the larges picture that you ca...

As to the hickory......try to find some pork flavored tobacco!! The should smoke really well in a hickory pipe!! :thumb: Nah....I wouldn't bother with using hickory. An old burl on a hickory tree might not crack but the flavor wouldn't be so nice. As to the Mimosa, I am familiar with the tree. I gre...

Very nice piece of wood!! It is a shame about the pits on the bottom but, as much as I am sure it would look "better" if you hadn't had to rusticate, I don't think that it distracts that much from the pipe. I do see what you mean about the stem. In the bottom pic, it looks a bit chunky, if...

Jeff,

Very nice work!!

The lovat, in particular, caught my eye but I do love the traditional shapes.

The sandblast (or rusticated) churchwarden has some quite knobby looking bamboo. Did you round it off or is it as sharpe as it looks in the picture?

Good luck at the show!!

Paul,
That didn't work so I sent I added the Tatum and resent it. This time it seems to have worked fine.

You might want to fix the link at the bottom of your homepage. The Paul Tatum link right after the Smoke Rings link.

Paul,

I sent it to: paul@tatumsworkshop

You didn't write a complete address in your last entry:
paul.tatum@
I wasn't sure as to what followed the @

So I went to your site to get the paul@ address. If you need me to resend it to another address then, please, let me know.

Ben,

6 inches is smaller than I was thinking. Using the Dunhill standards, what is the bowl size?

Pretty bowl and the effort you put into the curve paid off very well. It is nice and elegant!

Somewhere I have a long document on bamboo curing. It is an academic study of the different techniques. Most, if not all, are asian techniques.

If someone wants me to dig it up and send tit to them then just lest me know.
