Re: Bowl coating olive wood...

An olive wood pipe does taste different at first. Personally, I don't mind it, but in any case it goes away quickly. I'd say fewer than 10 bowls. It's been my experience that olive wood breaks in and cakes up faster than briar.

Re: Just wondering...

I've never sold a pipe. I either keep them and smoke them or give them as gifts to friends. I make pipes because I find it enjoyable. If it turns into a monetary enterprise some day that's fine, but I'm not in any hurry.

Re: Not really in the market, but....

I have that model. That seems like a decent deal for what is basically NOS condition. Got a screamin' deal on mine at $500, but it had definitely seen some use.

The pros and cons of the Jet 9x20 are pretty well covered here. Good value for an entry-level lathe. You can make pipes on 'em, for sure.

Re: Matching motor, VFD and house current

Mine is running on standard 110 house current since last August. No problems. I think it only goes to 1250 RPM.

Disclaimer: I know next to jack-nothing about electricity.

Re: My first shot at pipemaking

There might be a pipe in there. You'll need to remove a lot more material to see it though. #1 rookie move, not removing enough wood. Better to go a little too far than not far enough. That's how you learn where the line is. Just my opinion of course. I'm still a noob myself, so take it for whatever...

Re: First Churchwarden

Looks pretty good. In addition to what's already been said, I think the stem could use a bit more bend. Maybe 12-15° in a gently decreasing radius toward the button. When I'm smoking a pipe, I like the end of the stem at the button to be parallel, or nearly so, to the top of the bowl. It's easier fo...

Re: Then and Now

#1 vs. #10. Not as dramatic an improvement as some of you, but an improvement nevertheless. I'm hoping for a lot more progress over the next 10. http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii633/HorkyBamf/Pipe%20stuff/A1-1_zpsbbbcc8b5.jpg http://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii633/HorkyBamf/Pipe%20stuff/A10-...

Re: Because I don't know - Olive wood

I made an olive pipe because I'd never smoked one and was curious about it. Smoked it for the first time today.

Re: Cracked shank

I'm not going to throw it away but I might set it aside and come back to it later when I feel like my skills are better up to dealing with it. I have messed up the shank one way or another with most pipes I have made. Normally, I throw it to the side until I feel motivated/inspired to try to get it ...

Cracked shank

I dropped this stummel on the concrete floor while hand sanding to fine-tune the shape. The crack runs about 8mm up the shank. Thought about cutting off ~9mm, refacing, redrilling the mortise deeper. Rechucking it perfectly in the lathe and without damaging it would be a challenge though. A drill pr...

Re: Yet Another New Guy - Olive Wood Billiard

Thank you. I have a tendency to get excited as the pipe takes shape and in my enthusiasm I rush to the next step. I need to slow down and focus on details. I appreciate the feedback.

Yet Another New Guy - Olive Wood Billiard

I've been lurking here a few months, absorbing as much info as possible. This is my first post, but I've met a couple of you in person and conversed with others via email and Instagram. Everyone I've spoken with has been very approachable, helpful, and patient with my questions. I appreciate it very...
